Small / large primer pockets......what do you say????
« on: November 22, 2024, 09:32:07 AM »
As I search the web for some quality 308 brass....I am seeing they now make 308 win in SR primer pockets. This started with 6.5 creed and appears to be taking hold with other calibers now. My question (s).....what do you all think about this. Is SR primer pockets better than LR primer pockets. I have read some pros and cons.....and not sure what to think. I recently purchased Alpha SR 6.5 creed for one of my rifles, but haven't done any load development to date. I've never had issues with LR primer brass so why the change? I've never had primer pocket issues and my brass in non magnum cartridges and they last 10-15 reloads. I've read that SR primer brass can be a little more finicky.....is this true?

Trying to be open minded....but don't want to be all in on the SR primer pockets till they are proven. It's my understanding, the biggest pro (that is marketed) is primer pocket longevity due to more brass and less stretching. This has not been a major issue with non magnum cartridges in my reloading career.

If it was me.....
I'd use Magnum small rifle primers ,with a 308 brass that takes small rifles primer.
They do sell a magnum small rifle primers.
That's all I got.

Just a thought but if we have another primer shortage and small primers are at a premium and you can find large rifle.

Thats why my buddy has kept his 22/250 he can still shoot. Just his  :twocents:

But then most of you have never been in a small primer hunt.

This was one of my thoughts as to why SR primer pocket brass has come to the market.  Brass manufacturers realized that LR primers where is such short order, that they made brass for folks that had SR primers sitting on the shelf.

I hope to never be in the situation and have planned accordingly.

Cases are a lot tougher with sr primer pockets. There's a study online somewheres that shows a little better es with small primer pockets.

Lapua had been making 308 palma (small primer) brass for a long time before the small primer became popular in the creeds.
Ive shot near 10,000 small rifle primers in 308 bolt size cases and never had any issues at all.
Buy brass for whatever primers you have.  :twocents:
