Crab and Blast
« on: November 30, 2024, 10:03:23 PM »
This year was my first season crabbing and I really got hooked on it. I’ve  been duck hunting here for a couple years now and I would like to try dropping a couple pots on the way out to a duck hunting spot and picking them up on the way in. I live around the fort Lewis area so I’m used to running a boat and hunting on the salt flats like Nisqually.

Any advice on some general areas that would fit the scenario? Im eyeing John’s river and possibly some areas on the legal crabbing part of the hood canal. Not looking for personal honey hole, just the right direction.

First would be to check and make sure you can drop ‘capture’ pots.
Right now in some areas it may be closed to pot gear. Ring traps that lay flat ‘may’ still be open, but you do not soak those over night. They get pulled at 15-45 min usually.
Most any animal remains can be used for bait but clam and fish remains work good.
As far as where, slack tide, or an hour before and after is good for rings. Slower water movement generally works best. They are where you find them.
I have caught in anywhere from 12’-50’ deep. Staying away from very weedy areas is good. More so with pots than rings as the doors in pot type can get fouled.
Good luck!
Cuterebra are NOT cute!
