Tires for Ram 3500
« on: December 12, 2024, 11:43:51 AM »
Time to replace the hoops on my Ram 3500 4x4. Anyone tried the BF Goodrich KO3's on the big trucks. Not much off road other than Colockum hauling a camper a couple times a year.

🤔

I’m thinking about trying them next time if I can get them at the NEX.

I just had KO3 put on my 2500 Ram in August replacing Goodyear Duro whatever all mud and snows.   Not many miles on them so I cannot speak to wear.  I did have to turn around on a logging road after a rain snow mix and did not have to use 4 wheel drive which shocked me with the softness of the road.  So far so good

Went through this a year ago and found a few good videos on Youtube.com .  One guy had a business that ran 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and tested both the KO3 and KO2.  He got better wear out of the KO2's.

I ended up with the KO2 on my 1 ton Ram and to this point have been very happy.  Probably have 5-7K miles on them.

A complete non Fan of BF goodrich tires.   Bought the 2500 Ram and replaced them with under 2k due to so many flats out in the basalt.  Pretty looking things, but I chaulk em up to butter when on rough roads.   Hiway seemed good.

They aren't bullet proof, but I spend a lot less time on the Jack during prime time than anything else I have tried.   It is pretty much 100% what the loggers ran in the NE corner and on the Rez when I played around up there.  Logging sites are pretty hard on tires

Too loud for me, great tire thou.

I went back to the AT 3's with no issues and MUCH quieter.

I don’t believe there is a perfect tire, boat, RV…

The M-55’s have really hard rubber which makes them durable. They are a good option in a lot of situations, but not on wet roads.

I think the choosing a tire depends on how much and where you drive. M-55 is a good option for a lot of off road use. I personally like the BFG All Terrains. It’s a good balance of traction and quietness. Not perfect for everything, but a good compromise.

I only have experience with the KO-2 on two different Tundras over 320,000 miles.

I have a 2500 and hunting buddy a 3500 and I would say from my personal experience the BF KOs are great traction tire but lack durability.  I went from BF KO 2s to Wildpeak AT3s to BF KO 3s.  The Wildpeaks were a better tire for sure in regards to durability.  My hunting buddy went through a new set of KO either 2s or 3s in a year and a half.  Just my 2 cents.

I did extensive research on tires before buying my last set 2 months ago for my 3/4 ton ford diesel. BFG are not what they used to be. That’s what I had for my last set. k02. BFG don’t balance well and if they do, they go out of balance often. People are spending thousands on their front ends trying to fix a problem that is a simple tire issue. I decided to go with the falken wildpeak at4w. I went into ky local dealer and he said if I’d have asked about falken tire 10 years ago he’d have laughed me out of the store, but now they’re top of the line tire. He brought up the BFG balancing issue on his own. Same thing I’d been hearing. So far my falkens have been great in mud and snow, and no noise on the highway.

I had the KO2's on my jeep wrangler and toyota pick up and they performed great. Just not sure about them on a big ol heavy one ton with camper. Costco has the KO3 out the door for 1300 and some change. Includes tires filled with nitrogen.

From the interwebs.

What are the effects of using pure nitrogen to inflate tires?
*  Nitrogen is a gas and is still affected by changes in ambient temperature (about one psi for every 10° Fahrenheit). Nitrogen filled tires will require pressure be added during the fall/winter months as ambient temperatures and tire pressures drop. Nitrogen is good but can't change the laws of physics.
*  Nitrogen reduces the loss of tire pressure due to permeation through rubber over time by about 1/3. This helps maintain the vehicle's required tire pressures a little longer, but doesn't eliminate the need for monthly tire pressure checks. This is good for people who don't maintain their vehicles well.<
*  Nitrogen is a dry gas and will not support moisture that could contribute to corrosion of the tire's steel components (bead, sidewall reinforcement and belts) due to the absence of moisture over extended periods of time. However it's important to remember that atmospheric pressure is constantly pushing oxygen and moisture into the rubber from the outside of the tire. This is especially good for low mileage drivers who don't wear out their tires quickly or those that run average annual mileages but use long wearing radial (60K and 80K warranted) tires.
*  Nitrogen assures more consistent pressure increases due to increases in operating temperatures in a racing environment because of the absence of moisture. This is especially good for participants in track days, high-performance drivers education schools and road racing.
Drivers should use standard air if pressure adjustments are required when a local source of nitrogen can't be found during a trip. While this reduces the benefit of higher nitrogen content, it is far better than running the tires underinflated in search of a source.

I fill mine with 80% N2.

Currently have Michelin Agilis Cross Climate on my dually with cabover.  Not especially aggressive but are 3MS rated.  They've been solid.

If you run heavy, big tread blocks are a liability between tread squirm and lack of ability to shed heat.
