I have three crossbows since I moved here from the midwest.

The Scorpyd Orion 150 is by far my most accurate, fastest, smoothest shooting crossbow I own. Definitely my favorite to shoot and kill animals with. However, it is a bit wide, long, and is more difficult to travel airlines with. It is also no longer in production, but Scorpyd does have other bows. I would shoot a deer out to 60 yards all day long.

For airline travel, I much prefer my Ravin R26X. Not as accurate, but accurate enough to kill whitetails out to 40 yards, probably 50. Had a buddy shoot one at 92 yards, but my limit is less. It's short, narrow, crank only. But it's also loud. It also went through cables fairly quickly (less than 100 shots in a year and they broke completely) until I replaced the cable system with Firenocks Pulley System. The R29X is even faster, but more front heavy and even worse on cable life.

Lastly, a Mission Sub-1. Nice bow, but not as fast or accurate (oddly) as my other bows. But, I like it, and the de-cocking feature is great.

Side note: Get bolts that are spine-indexed. You'll really love the improved accuracy, especially with not having to tune fixed blade broadheads.

What type of elk hunting will you be doing? Stalking? Ground blind? The type of hunting might influence your choice.

Specifically, on my Ravin my cables broke (both aftermarket and factory), not my string. But, thats a risk you run with using the factory Ravin cable/string system. Ravin even admits to short lifespan of cables/string on their FAQ page.

Haven't ever owned a Tenpoint. I know they were a sleeping giant that got behind on the technology curve for awhile. But looking at their website, their offerings look pretty good today. Might want to peruse archerytalk or crossbownation forums for feedback.

Pretty much hunting crossbow for all seasons last three years.  I've got two and happy with performance.  TP Vapor RS470 and Viper S415.  Both have performed well on deer, elk with the Viper this year and shoot the same arrows.  I hunt mainly from blinds and all shots have been complete pass thru at 25 - 50 yards.  I need a solid rest, and both are designed well for that.  Cons are I haven't found a local knowledgeable archery shop I would trust to work on one.  Shipping is expensive.
Economy failure = Too many people spending money they don't have on things they don't need to impress people they don't like.

Very true statement. This is not a crossbow friendly state, and there is little infrastructure for crossbow support due to that.

That being said, I bought a press to work on my own. They are not hard to tune compared to a regular compound bow and they are not hard to work on.
