North of the Border Wolf- Kitty Hunting
« on: January 08, 2025, 08:56:51 PM »
Last March I won an auction at a RMEF Banquet for a wolf hunt North of Smithers BC... added a Lynx to the mix and probably a good thing. Saw wolf sign and heard them, but were never able get on any.
Ran a cat every day for the 1st 4 days with the dogs, but they gave us the slip each time.  On the 5th day we broke out the FoxPro and 3 minutes into the 4th set up of the day, this guy came in mach3 and pounced on the foxpro... he hesitated for a second and now he is going to be staying in a much warmer climate after a visit to the taxidermist  :chuckle:
Awesome country, didn't see a ton of critters but did see a few. Temps were low, one morning when we started it was -5* and never got over 15*
Had a run in with some river otters eating a steelhead and watched them for 1/2hr.. saw a few moose...

I love that area up north of Smithers. Looks like you had a great time.
The Safeway in Smithers is the one that the big Moose wandered in to do some shopping about 10-12 years ago.

I remember that... did a goat hunt up there around the same time... if I remember, the moose had to be put  down

Awesome cat!  They are very hard to tree in snow because they pretty much float across it if there’s any base where as the dogs sink.  I’ve killed cougars and bobcats, but would absolutely love a Lynx!

Oh wow, what a neat trip. What was their strategy for hunting wolves?

We had a bait going and spent some time calling. Did get some response one afternoon which was freakin cool, but they weren't interested enough to come visit. We spent most of the trip trying to get the cat and if they hit the bait, we were going to change gears.
