I usually get 5 to 10 birds a year and all but one have been ruffed grouse. When I got the blue I showed it to a couple hunters a few hours later and they said it was the smallest one they ever seen. :yike: I don't care though because it tasted great. I don't really ever go out after grouse. I just try and keep a shotgun or .22 with me in case I see one. I did make the mistake of trying to take one out with my 300 win mag. I aimed for the ground about 2 feet in front of it with hopes of only a couple rocks killing it. The breast was so full of gravel I couldn't chew without hurting my teeth. :bash:

Just for laughs, how large do you think an adult blue grouse can get?
How many pounds?
How tall?

I've seen one that would rival a sage grouse once.  Biggest grouse  I've ever seen.  The breast was bigger than a northern greenhead's.

Been there before.  I've shot two with my 30 06.  There was nothing left to eat, what a waste.  I only shoot at them with a shotgun or a 22 now.

How bout shooting them in the head?  I have shot the heads or necks off of a lot of grouse with my .270 and 45-70.  Me and my dad always keep track of how many grouse we kill every year.  One year for some reason I wrote down how many I shot with a shotgun and how many with my rifles.  Out of 32 grouse that year I shot the heads off of 18 of them with a rifle.  That is also the only year that I have ever killed more grouse than my dad.

Thats what I was trying to do. Just kept hitting them in the body so I quit trying.

Iceman...What on earth is that gruel into which you have inserted perfectly good sections of grouse?

That looks awful.

A rice dish, not quite done yet, so a little wet still. We like it.

My brother shot the head off one at 5 yds. with a 7mm STW... no head left.  Tasted yummy though!  Oh, an I like blues the best, just because I  like the high country more.  But I will shoot either.
I would rather be a conservative nut job, than a liberal with no nuts, and no job!
