Degreasing advice
« on: January 29, 2025, 04:56:20 PM »
I've got a boar skull that wasn't degreased properly by my brother a few years ago. My plan is to soak it in some warm Dawn soap and water for a month but am wondering if anyone has a recc on which aquarium heater I should use to keep the water at a certain temp. I'd take reccs on what that temp should be. Also, he meticulously and accurately re anchored the teeth and then glued the jaw together. Do you think this process is going to cause the teeth to drop out?
Thanks

I’m not sure you can get any aquarium heater to get to the proper degreasing temp. 120 deg.is what you want. I’d add some ammonia to the mix as well. Good luck.

The teeth may fall back out. Little Elmer’s glue and put them right back in

Currently using this. It seems to work well. I was using the cheaper one off of amazon but i only lasted a week and quit working.

Soaked in acetone for 2 days. I’m back in the the hot soapy water now. It think I’m almost done. . I’ll acetone bath it once more i think. I used blue dawn and the dawn in the spray bottle. I post a photo tomorrow and see if some of the experts think im ready for whitening. This is the first one I’ve done.
You gonna draw those pistols or whistle Dixie?

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Forget the heater and dawn. Those pig skulls and bear skulls don’t degrease easily. Get yourself an HDPE bucket with a lid and a couple gallons of acetone. Fully submerge the skull in the acetone with the lid on and forget about it for a couple months. That is the absolute best degreaser for non antlered animals. Store it in a corner somewhere safe. After you’re done degreasing pull it out and let it dry then give a nice soap bath and dry again. After I’d do this I get 27.5% peroxide from the pool store. The brand I use is Soft Swim C clarifier. Leave it in a bucket of that overnight and you will have a beautiful skull.

Here is a pig skull I did following what I said above. It started out as greasy or greasier than the picture you posted! Good luck and let us know what you decide to do and how it turned out.
