Anyone make their own Elk calls?
« on: June 20, 2009, 12:12:10 PM »
I would like to begin venturing into more elk calling, anyone have suggestions on do-it-your-self elk calling kits?  I would prefer diaphragm type, they free my hands up.

There's a kit that you can buy to make your own mouth calls.  My buddy makes them for me with 4 reeds.  The best thing is that you can get good at changing how tight to stretch each reed and get a good sound.  The ones he gives me are simply dynamite, albeit with a shorter lifespan than store bought ones for some reason; one September of hard elk hunting, and they are toast.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

Caretaker,

I have my own diaphragm call making press.  I had it made by a person in Ohio that makes them for competition turkey callers.  This press is fantastic in that you can stretch each call to the exact .000 so you can make each one sound the same once you figure out your favorite recipe.  The press will cost you around $700.  You can buy materials from Ron Eppley at pioneerturkeycalls.com.  I am a competition elk caller and avid elk bowhunter. Making your own calls opens up a whole new world.....pm me for more info if you want.

Take Care,

JT
