Apps per Tag for Muzzy Elk
« on: May 15, 2025, 10:44:15 AM »
As an interesting though exercise, I thought I'd look through number of total apps per tag for each of the EM quality elk tags, as a EM elk tag holder this year.  There's a lot of variation and BS when it comes to average points, espeically for low volume tags, but I think its kind of interesting to see what the total hunter demand is.  I'm aware these represent a couple of different selections as you have 2 options on your quality app, but its still interesting.  I'm curious what people think of the quality of these muzzy hunts versus the interest (as judged by applications per tag).  The results weren't really what I had expected.  These are essentially all late Sept/Early Oct 1-2 week hunts.  The Yakima herd hunts are generally 9/27-10/3 and the Blues hunts are generally 9/29-10/10.

I can't wait to be a non-resident with a quality bull special permit.  That'll draw some scowls.

I guess my point is, if a person had a choice of any quality bull hunt in the state for muzzy... this would indicate they'd hunt Goose Prairie or Mission over say Colockum.  And Cowiche over Tucannon.  That kind of surprises me.

I think a lot of these apps are put in for areas simply because that's the area they hunt during general season and has little to do with quality of bulls in the unit.

These ratios really only work for the first tag being drawn.
Use the peaches hunt for example if you only lose 1 app per tag being awarded
599 apps / 4 tags = 149.75 apps per tag
598 apps / 3 tags = 199.3 apps per tag
597 apps / 2 tags = 298.5 apps per tag
596 apps / 1 tag = 596 apps per tag
Best odds is roughly .67% for that tag at 1 tag per 149 apps
They is where you aint and you aint where they is.

Exactly

We hunt a certain area, we know and only put in for that area. It’s not about quality or numbers. It’s all about an area we know.
