Muzzleloader rifling damage?
« on: April 03, 2025, 09:28:00 AM »
So I got a new muzzy a year and a half ago. It has been out hunting no more than 7 days and to the range twice.
I have cleaned it and everything just as I have my past muzzleloader.
With one exception, after getting my elk in October, I swear I remember unloading it and cleaning it. I went to take it out to get ready to go to the range to find I had not. So irritated with myself. It's pretty gross but I am getting it cleaned up best I can.
But I got a camera scope for Christmas and sent it through to find all these burs/nicks etc throughout the barrel.
Anyone seen this? I can't think of much I do in my normal processes that would cause this. Is it possible that it came that way?
I am concerned about it, especially since it's one I have drooled over for a long time and was a gift from the whole family to me.
Is there anything I can do about it?
Its a Traditions Vortek Strikerfire LDR.
Thanks

Have you shot it since? The bores in my muzz don't look great either but they still shoot well. Never scoped em but you can see multiple spots looking down the bore when they're clean.

For me the pics are pretty hard to tell what is going on. That said, I have had firearms that had what would be 'bad' bores that shot fine. I would clean it and try it. If it hits where you aim it, use it.

Step one: throw your bore scope in the deepest darkest hole of your closet you can.

Step 2: go shoot the gun and let that be the indicator of firearm function.

Bore scopes are cool and all but people get way too wrapped up in what they are seeing. It flat out doesn't matter what it looks like if the gun shoots.

Also, BP and BP substitutes are very corrosive.  If left uncleaned they WILL cause pitting. Doesn't mean they still won't be accurate rifles, it just means you gotta be more proactive to keep them from getting worse.

Go shoot that thing and report back

What I am seeing in those pictures is the reflection of light off the copper fowling.  Get a good copper removing cleaner and get your barrel clean.  Then go shoot it to get it Fowler again and I bet you’ll be just fine.  Most barrels shoot better with a little fowling in them.
