It'd be nice if the state published, at the very least, the info on how many damage tags were allocated and filled in each GMU. But I'm guessing it wouldn't be a good look for them.

They wont. We all would be shocked and appalled if we found out. Way more animals killed this way than most people/hunters could even comprehend. One of the biggest scams out there. Tons of opportunity for fraud. We need to get Elon involved!  Most of the people on this forum that support this are dipping into the spoils with the system. I had a friend that had an orchard outside of Walla Walla and the amount of tags and the amount of deer that were killed was sick and he just owned a small orchard.

I think there is another thread on this but I agree with dvolmer. Have had numerous landowners lower their tone and get a sly grin when talking about how they get to use these to "protect their crops". Let the cows eat the crops until the bull shows up and then just shoot him type of stuff.

I agree that depredation tags can have a negative impact, but I thought most depredation tags are antlerless only?

If it's like Oregon, they are antlerless. Landowners can get LOP tags for antlered animals though

They have all been antlerless only.

I believe most are. But there is antlered tags out there. Back in the day (maybe still happening not sure) a lot of the big Hanford bulls were being killed on Landowner tags sold for big bucks

Some of those Hanford bulls were flat out MONSTERS.

I was aware that some were harvested by folks paying a trespass fee to neighboring landowners during open seasons, but I didn't know any bulls were shot using depredation tags.   (Not doubting you;  I just didn't know).

On a related note, BUGLE magazine (many years ago) wrote some really interesting/informative articles on the Hanford elk herd.   I loved reading those.

I could be totally wrong, but.....my guess would be there are non. and antlered animals killed every year in a depredation style kill (orchard)...with NO tag/permit involved. Who's gonna know ?

Anyone have a lead on affordable apple tree starts? With the pending ban on baiting and constant new restrictions the best bet for me is planting a 5 acre apple orchard and claiming damage so I can hunt it when I want

Per the RCW Landowner Damage Tags are ALL antlerless in WA except for some specific areas.  The RCW also lists all the area quotas for those tags.

Lots of reasons(legitimate) to kill antlered causing damage.  Multiple enabling legislation.  It could be streamlined for transparency but I believe it's not intentionally deceptive.

I know an orchard owner whose 2-3 outside rows of cherry trees get tore up every year by bull elk......he does not shoot them, or the cows. The damage that they do is microscopic compared to the amount of income from the rest of the crop.

If a grower is getting hit so hard (highly doubt it) that it's impacting their bottom line, they can and should put up fencing.


I have all sorts of creepy crawlys that attack my logs. Should I expect the guberment to control them or pay me to control them?  NOT!

I know of landowners outside of Benton city and prosser who get damage tags for bulls and they’re always when the bulls are in velvet. June is normally when they target them. A lot of the damage tags out there are spike/antlerless and go from August until end of March. The bulls have a much shorter season. I think they only allow antlered damage tags in areas that are any elk to begin with. The others will always just be antlerless.
