Bear behavior
« on: June 12, 2025, 09:39:48 PM »
Today as I was eating a snack preparing to walk back down the hill I just walked up, I caught some movement across the way and glassed up a nice looking chocolate bear. After a couple moments a smaller jet black came into view as well. It sure didn't look like a cub. Do bears hang around each other during the rut? Or did I just see a large mama and her huge baby?

It’s getting close to that time of year so quite possible you were seeing some rut activity.

My guess is that neither are as big as you think and it was a sow and yearling :twocents: Its the time of year that it could have been a boar/sow tho

If there is a good food source there could be multiple bears in the area.

I was just gonna say that .
They may be breeding or doing whatever.
Fall food source is needed.
I've seen bears this time of year, only to be gone to better pasture in the fall.
Almost like they have green grass breeding areas.

That is what I've been thinking. Only got a minute or 2 of looking before they feed into the trees.

Huckleberries galore! I see em in the area every year during deer and elk archery but have yet to stick one. Taking the rifle out on more walks this year.

The last week of June saw a few not far from each other.
Plus a couple real close to each other.

In early August I’ve seen eight bears in one small south facing slope clear cut that was grass grazing area for bears, and deer. Fun to watch how the deer know the bears are there but both walk in circles around each other with no predatory response from the bears.

These were does with out fawns, and bucks.
