Turkey hunting observations
« on: April 22, 2025, 01:27:01 PM »
Ran into a few hunting groups this year and  oticed a few things.  I'm down around Hunters and couple of the groups had been hunting up around Colville.  They came down my way looking for a place to hunt and then proceeded to tell me they'd been around birds that morning but couldn't seal the deal. My question was why leave an area you know has birds and go wandering off to an area you don't know well. Stay in that area you know. Seems to me there are 2 types of flocks around. First are those that have settled into a relatively small area, have pretty much the same daily routine and don't  change much unless heavily pushed. Second are those  nomad groups that have a much larger home base area and don't really have a repeating daily routine. These groups kinda roost wherever they are when it gets dark whereas the first group.ususlly return to the same spot. First group are easier to hunt because they can be patterned and ambushed.  Second group is tough because just when you think you have em figured they've moved on.First group can be frustrating because their routine is on private ground and you see em daily but they never vary their routine and come off the private ground. Second group requires a couple days observation and second guessing to anticipate where they'll be, but are usually the group where you have better luck calling in those satellite toms hanging on the fringes of the main group. Don't waste a lot of time hunting those that have a dialed in private ground routine (unless you have permisson.and that's where the majority of hunters get their birds)  but don't leave an area that has those  nomad flocks. You might not hear or see em today, but the same spot tomorrow might be right in the middle of em.

Seems like you just described most public land in the NE.
Right place/right time.
It's a tactic that most public land hunters use.
If it doesn't work out in one spot ,move on.
Cover ground/Run and gun.
It's how the game is played, guy might only have a weekend.
Or a limited time to hunt,so you maximize the amount of ground to cover.
Probably just going that direction on the way home.
Hitting spots on the way,I would definitely do that.
