F250 or Silverado 2500?
« on: May 09, 2025, 08:18:27 AM »
It's about time for a new truck. Currently driving a 2012 f150XLT that I bought new, and have absolutely loved. I'm moving up to a 3/4 ton because I frequently tow a heavy dump trailer that is at the top end of the F150's capability. My biggest concern with moving up is ride quality, but admittedly the only 3/4 tons I've owned were 1979 and 1981 Chevys, so a lot has changed! Also want gas, and the shorter bed. Would like to hear about your experience with either.
Thanks

Our work trucks are Chevy 2500 diesels in the 2015-2020 range and they’re extremely powerful but at any moment you could lose your high pressure fuel pump and get a bill for 15k not covered by warranty.

My kids service work truck has a Ford gasser (7.3 or .2)  He said it is reliable but sucks fuel like Rosie Odonell in a buffet.  Again it has a service box so a lot of weight on it all the time.

I have a 2020 Ram 2500 6.4 and use it to exclusively tow (camper, boat, utility trlr)  It has a ton power.  I get 15mph empty driving like a church lady.  As soon as you hook a trailer 10 is it no matter how you drive.   It replaced a 2012 Ram 2500 and there is zero Comparisions.  The 2020 is 10000% percent better in all facets.

I also have a new Silverado 2500HD gas, and I've been very impressed. The ride is good considering what it is, but it's definitely stiffer than a 1/2 ton. The 10 speed transmission seems to do a good job of finding the right power band all the time.

From what I'm reading it sounds like the F250 with the solid front axle is a little beefier, but provides a stiffer ride.

Have you ruled out Dodge?

Hasn't their pick up won Motor Trends Truck of the Year for like 10 years running?

i have a silverado 2500hd gas 6.0 as well (2008), definitely rides harsher than a 1/2 ton, but its not my daily.
im going to throw the sulastic shackles on the back...supposedly makes it ride more like a 1/2 ton.
what year/budget are you looking at getting into?

If you want to go down the rabbit hole, there is a channel on youtube called the fast lane truck, where they load all sorts of different year, make and model trucks and tow them up and down "Ike gauntlet" some steep mountain pass in Colorado.
Out of the gas variety at least until 2016, dodge preformed the worst, chevrolet was a dramatic step up, but at the end of the day, the fords did the best. All 3/4 tons mind you.

I will personally say. I had a 01 silverado 2500hd 6.0 v8 and loved it for the ride quality.

Then I fell into a 2012 f-250 superduty 6.2 gas and It tows SO much better than my chevrolet did, both trucks are extended cab, 4 wheel drive, short box pickups.
The ford has substantially more power, but thr ride is very harsh.
Understandably, it's not a true apples to apples comparison.
We have alot of newer 3/4ton trucks at work, chevrolets and fords, and I honestly would say if you want the ride quality go with a chevrolet, if you don't mind a stiffer riding truck, go with the Ford.

New, and no specific budget. But I have no need for a decked out truck. I'd actually prefer and and XL or XLY in the Ford or a WT or Custom in the Chevy.

Ya, I just don't have any Dodge love for whatever reason. Unless it has a 440 Six-Pack!

Whatever you get, get it with the adaptive cruise control and navigation. The new Ford F250 Super Baja edition is just out of my price range at $150K.
