Cowiche Quality Buck
« on: June 11, 2025, 06:32:20 AM »
So this year, like every other year I threw in the towel for drawing anything that would get me excited given my mid level points and history of drawing squat. So my strategy was to simply pick ones that I had minimal chance of drawing and plan on going with the general season.

In my inbox I get an email saying contgrats you drew the Cowiche Quality rut tag! Now...i'll be honest, i didnt even know where Cowiche was up until about 10 minutes ago.

I'm going to give it hell this year but would love to chat with any previous tag holders to see where to begin given that I haven't ever stepped foot in the unit or knew even knew where it was on the map.

DMs are open and very much appreciated!

There is alot of deer around but don’t set your sites too high or you may be disappointed. That being said you should be able to find a respectable 4pt

That’s not really a mule deer area it’s bench leg territory. More so blacktail then mule deer.

I've heard there are some access issues and I need to dial those down myself.

@buglebuster, are there any closed roads out Tampico or Cowiche Mill Road?

I have a quality elk muzzy tag.  I would be happy to share trail cam info with you.  Hunted there for several years.  Didn't see many banger bucks but we were pretty deep in.

I’ve done a lot of hunting in the Okanogan area in the last 30+ years. One of the biggest bucks I’ve ever seen was while elk hunting in the Cowiche. There are some good ones in there, but they aren’t around every tree. Hopefully you find a good one and good luck to you.

Whereabouts is it gated off at? Starting my e scouting now and that would be super helpful info to plan around.

I see you applied for a unit you've never been in.

I've had some really great hunts doing exactly that.    :tup
It's a fun way to learn a new unit.

I've hunted to Cowiche some, but I'm no expert compared to some folks on here.

Good luck!

I'm late on this but I wanted to give a shoutout to all the guys on here who were willing to give me some pointers on my cowiche quality buck tag. Especially Tracy (unsure of your last name Tracy) and Michael Turner who give me some amazing real time tips that I was able to build into my hunt while i was there. Overall, i had an absolute blast. This was my first quality tag I've ever drawn and it did not disappoint. There were lots of rutting bucks running around which was super cool to see. However, this was not in any way a slam dunk hunt. There were a few times where I thought I may just have to eat the tag since a lot of the activity we were seeing was on private land that we didnt have access too. However, on the last day I had to hunt, we came across this stud that I was not about to let walk. One shot was all I needed to put this guy on the ground. Such a cool experience in some amazing country, and even better that my dad got to be a part of it. The buck was really just a bonus

Great story and great write up..  but even a better photo to memorialize it, that an awesome background.  I still hunt with my dad at 78yrs old.  Wouldn't trade the experience of being able to that either...  Congrats
