Kinda fun LH rimfire rifle project
« on: June 20, 2025, 11:46:37 AM »
I had a real junky Remington 581 LH barreled action and a LH stock that I believe was originally for a LH Anschutz Sporter.  Bubba and Co had made a stab at using the stock for a LH 581, when I got it looked like it had been bedded w/Pro Bed 2000 using a garden trowel and rake.  It came my way as part of a grab bag and I had considered throwing it in the Bucket o’ Stocks in the garage that I screw a broomstick on for a barrel and the kids play shoot em up with them.  It had been basketweave carved at one point then finished with what looked like snot.  The BA sat about a quarter inch higher than it does now, my inclination is that when Bubba discovered that the stock was not deep enough to contain the trigger assy and magazine guide they gave up.

I looked for a barrel, but had a nice new CZ 457 barrel that would look a lot nicer than the straight cylindrical original Remington barrel.  We threaded the receiver and barrel shank and added a recoil lug to give the barrel something to butt up against and screwed the barrel on.  They are originally pinned, nothing wrong with that but it’s hard to cut the pin ways precisely where they need to be.

I inletted the BA to just about the right depth so the top of the stock sits at mid point of the BA and set it on pillars that I left long from the bottom of the stock.  It’s not right, but it’s close to mid point, I should have got it another 32nd inch or so lower and it would look better, but it’s much better than it was.

Then I found a piece of walnut that matched up pretty well and used it to solve the depth issue and inletted the magazine plate so it would look a bit better.

It’s not a bad looking rifle at this point and should be really accurate.  Not bad for a refugee from the scrap heap.  The receiver cleaned up really nicely.

I’ve still got a bit of work left to do.

Anyway, here's a link to a thread on this project.

I have a lot of admiration for those like yourself who can do this type of project. Looks like a fun project with nice results. I have an older Sako Forester that I'm tempted to do a little work on, but not sure I wouldn't do more harm than good as in the past I've been rather inept at this type of project.

It may be a good thing that tearing into a rifle can be intimidating.  They can be challenging until a guy gets a little hands on experience. I’m all about others taking up doing the sort of projects I have been sharing, but it’s definitely a good idea to start with honest to God junkers before tearing into something that is worth something.

This sure would have been easier to have started with a 541S stock and filled in the bolt handle notch on the right side and filed a new one on the left.  I had a couple 541 stocks sitting here when I started on this project.  I used one on another project and still have a nice one.

I have a 580 single shot action I’m putting an Anschutz target barrel on and an MPI Benchrest stock to put that in and have a real nice 541T barrel that has had the chamber cut off and has been rechambered using a Lilja Match reamer.  I have a 581 receiver and a 541 bolt I’m going to put the latter barrel on.  I might open up the barrel channel and use my other 541 stock on that.

I put a bunch of photos up on the linked thread tonight and discuss what I am currently doing.  It may be of interest.

Spent the day working in the truck patch, but took a few breaks and put a couple coats of finish on.  I posted a dozen or so photos at the link above.  It’s about to wrap up.
