Idaho general deer area 5.
« on: June 23, 2025, 02:16:59 PM »
Hello All.
things did not go my way this year with a controlled unit hunts and i will be hunting Idaho unit 5. I was hoping to get some information on unit 5. I have already started my searching online and on ONX maps. I plan to head over that way late august to check it out and see the areas.
I do know to stay away from tribal land and i have looked at many of the larger land owners that allow access to there land.
I will be hunting general deer. Mainly whitetail since i have read there are very few Mulley's in the area. I know it may be cold there and i am ready for the weather. 2 years ago i hunted unit one and it was actually pretty warm, that area was a bust, saw more wolves than bucks, never did get a shot.
Yes i will also have a wolf tag.

My questions to you are.
Best time to hunt? I'm guessing the rut near thanksgiving. is there a better time.
any other areas to stay away from or go toward?
I might be staying in St. Marie's but depending on the weather may pull my trailer over there and use that.

Again thank you for your time in reading this.
I appreciate any comments.

Absolutely for rut timing. If you plan on rattling I'd go a week earlier, however.

Thanks for your comments. i appreciate it

Im trying to go the week of the 10th. My hunting partner was not able to get a tag for the same unit so im trying to figure out someway to not go alone.
My wife and 2 young kids may join me for a few days since they have a few days off from school.

I have never rattled so that might be interesting thing to try.

I have already found some good large parcels of land on ONX so im still hoping to get over there to scout sometime next month.

Is this a general deer tag or a whitetail tag?

General tag.

Wasn’t sure how much mule deer there is in that area.
