What are your macros for extended hunts
« on: August 09, 2025, 07:56:37 AM »
Curious what others macros look like for extended backcountry hunts. Typically i hunt for 25-30 days straight in September and have always weighed my food and made sure my cals were equal to the Oz or somewhere close. Never struggled from crashing or malnourished fatigue. This year however I thought I'd look at the breakdown of everything I take for a day. This list does not include freeze dried meals and is just my snacks throughout the day. Typically take one per day for dinner and on a 5 day hunt will always throw in a couple top Ramen bags for extra. My Typical dinners vary in companies and variety but are all between 700-1100 calories.

Weight-18.25oz
Calories-2270
Protein- 88 grams
Carbs- 237 grams
Fat- 105 grams
Sugar- 110 grams

Tagging along here. I’ve never counted the calories or broke down the protein/ carbs etc. I just make a gallon ziplock for each days worth of food not including dinner stuff. Usually have a protein shake similar to muscle milk in the morning as I’m leaving camp. If I’m spiking out I’ll throw in a mountain house for dinner and some extra bars. I could definitely step my game up in this department I’m curious to see what guys are browsing on

Thats been me as well for last 10 years of backpack hunting. This is the first time I added everything up. Want to bring my protein up about 20 more. As of now with a freeze dried id only be sitting about 115-130 which is a little low, but worked for years.

I've never broke it down.  Just always have had enough.   Typically tag out early and always have extra and then its the choice of whether to toss it or carry it back out.  Freeze dried is always so expensive so tend to carry it and burn the underwear.    Typically supplement with steak or liver in the end.

Definitely burn the underwear. I get that, but even if I tag out early I never go home. Typically have two elk tags to fill and if successful on both early ill find guys to go hop in with and enjoy the experience.  I only got so many September's left until I'm no longer able and won't miss a single day of it.

I’m more interested in how people pull off hunting for 30 days straight than I am about calories.
I’m with Bone. Just want to make sure I have plenty to eat. Logical breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks packed always got me by. It’s been a while since I’ve backpack hunted.

Never crossed my mind. I have bars /sometimes dehydrated stuff for breakfasts lunch a peak and dinner a peak meal. Then have candy bar, jerky , smoked salmon and nuts as snacks . Always full and that’s only thing that matters to me.

I’d be physically wrecked, unemployed and divorced.

I have a ton of smoked salmon. How are you keeping yours good on backpack hunts, or are you buying the sealed kind like tuna. Ive always wanted a way to bring more of that in the mountains with me.

Depends on hunt. Most October and November hunts I’m not worried about the salmon. So much salt in it it’s tough for it to go bad. If it’s hot and my camp I’d have a hole dug in ground and put some food in it and cover hole.
