Scouting Pics from today
« on: June 27, 2009, 11:21:07 PM »
Went up to elk camp to get a load of wood and there were elk everywhere.  Saw about 40 head, including 13 branched antler bulls.  Unfortunately I didn't see most of the bulls til right before dark, so most of the pics on my crappy digital didn't make it out.  Only the two that silhouetted themselves on the ridge.  This is the first herd I saw.  Probably about 25 to 30 head.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

After the herd moved out of sight, I circled up to the ridge they were headed to, got out of the truck, and posted myself at the edge of a meadow.  Soon there were elk all around me.

I tried to get some pics of cows and calves moving past me, but the brush was too thick, and none of them came out, so I moved back in the direction of the truck.  Just before the truck I spotted more elk below me, so I moved in close for a couple of pics.  Turned out to be three spikes and a cow.

I drove to where I was cutting wood, spotting 4 more elk on the way (too quick for a picture).  Loaded up the truck and left about sunset.  On the way out I spotted a good branched antler bull and snapped a few pics, but they didn't turn out.  Just as I topped the ridge, I came around a corner and saw 8 more branched bulls, out in a meadow.  I tried to take pics, but it was too dark at this point and they all came out black.  I did manage to get two of the bulls when they skylined themselves, but that was the best I could do.  Back in the truck I drove around the corner and saw 3 more branched bulls run across the road in front of me.
Nice day to be in the woods.  I gotta draw a bull tag one of these days... :bash: :bash:

Man, love to see all those branch antlered bulls.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

That is really cool, I'm guessing you where down in the Blues? Crappy pics are better than no pics

In that last couple of shots there were actually 6 more bulls that you can't see.  3 of them were already large bulls (G5s already 10 inches long), and I know they still have some growing to do before they shed.  You could have filled the entire branched antler bull quota for that unit (archery and modern firearm) out of what was in that one meadow...
