Selling AR15 out of state
« on: August 22, 2025, 04:16:15 PM »
As a Washington resident, is it legal to head to Idaho and sell an AR15? I built quite a few as a hobby years ago, but am getting into the bolt action building game now, and wouldn't mind converting a few ARs to cash to fund a nice 7mm PRC build. A friend said he has taken stuff to the gun shows in Idaho and sold them right there or traded for other stuff. Just curious on your experience with that.

It’s fine. No FFL required for private sales. Handguns are still a no no. Take a look at Zidaho.com. They have a nice online classified section for firearms and all things associated with firearms.

No, you can't legally sell any guns to non licensees  without a dealer facilitating the transfer in Idaho. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/922

I definitely stand corrected. Thank you for posting that Dredi. Sorry for potentially sending you down the wrong wrong path.

Thanks guys. I kind of debated with the guy about it and said that didnt sound right, but he insisted it was OK. Either way, I could legally sell an AR in Idaho if I had the FFL to facilitate the sale it sounds like.

Quite the read there dreadi!!

A lot of "infringed" legal talk, but then I don't speak lawyer/politician English.  I prefer Webster's English.

Everything was OK with Idaho, until our new AG threatened "Civil" lawsuits against any dealer in Idaho who bought or sold to a WA resident.

Don't ya just love the D's???

Depending on what you have I’d just split the uppers off and get most of the money. Then you still have lowers that you can never get back.

I’m with you on the legal language Timberfaller. I’m wondering though. Since you can’t even sell those types of firearms in this state, couldn’t you just go through an Idaho FFL and legally sell them there? It seemed to me that as long as a licensed dealer was involved it would be legal, just no interstate sales by private sellers.

You're welcome. Here's the Ruby Ridge English version

"Generally, for a person to lawfully transfer a firearm to an unlicensed person who resides out of state, the firearm must be shipped to a federal firearms licensee (FFL) within the transferee’s state of residence. The transferee may then receive the firearm from the FFL upon completion of an ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check."

Isn't only the Lower that has to go through a FFL?
I would pop the pins and go sell the Uppers somewhere outside Washington.  :hello:

I was unaware that Wa had made them completely illegal until I was in a gun store and noticed they did not have any on display so asked about it.
Wow.
Washington sure is messed up these days.
Cuterebra are NOT cute!
