Hunting alone - May need support
« on: August 25, 2025, 08:33:05 AM »
I'm hunting out of Carson starting the 6th -14th. If I get a bull down, is there anyone that would be willing to help for a hind quarter? Please PM, if so, with your name and number. Thanks guys.

Hey Piano!   Put me on your call list!   You got my number already.  It would take me a couple hours to get up to the Gorge from the Willamette Valley, but I know the Wind River valley etc. pretty well.

GO GET ONE!  Don't get too picky about the bony bits above the ears...  :chuckle:

Thanks Mark. I'm definitely in it for the meat. They took antlerless off the menu this year in both 560 and 572.

I could be available the 12th-14th.

We're erecting 750,000 lbs of steel that I'm in charge of next month so a mid-week sick day or two is a no-go unfortunately.

If you're in a pinch, give a call, John. Can't be primary, but I got family down there and two boys that might be able to do a quick run from here. Won't leave you hangin' if you're in a bind!

Are you considering the washougal unit? Think anterless is still allowed in that unit. I'll be out with my group north of there but if my phone hits coverage and you call I'll give you a hand.

They did change to bull only last year in 560 and 572 :'(

I'll pm you my number

Wish you were hunting the Manastash, leaving Friday for a 6 day solo hunt, the closer it gets the less happy my wife is about it.

Well, big fat goose egg for elk and deer. But I do want to thank all of you who put their hand up when I asked for support. It made my hunt easier knowing I'd have help when needed. As it turns out, the only thing I hauled out of the woods were bags of nice chanterelles...and I can't complain about that. Did I hunt hard every day? Maybe not every day, but most days. Lots of miles on the boots. There was just nothing to see. I found very little fresh sign - none the first few days. Even the morning I awoke late and covered about 80 miles of roads, there wasn't a hair to be seen. In one week, I saw one bear cub cross the road in front of me and two does in a farmer's yard. That's it.

My stay was quite comfortable in a cabin looking out over the Trout Lake NAP - Natural Area Preserve - with a great view across from Mt. Adams. Lots of elk bugles right below the cabin and no hunting access. That sound sure gets you motivated, though. The cabin was well-appointed - heat and air, great cooking supplies and a new gas range and full fridge, comfortable bed and shower. I was able to set up a 30-40 yard range on the dirt road outside the front door. And a low internet signal still allowed me to use my phone as a hot spot. I had pre-cooked steaks, chicken thighs, and pulled BBQ pork, along with corn, potatoes, lots of coffee, oatmeal, eggs, bacon, sausage, and protein drinks to get me started. I had more food than I needed in the end. There may have been consumption of bourbon and cigars, as well.

All in all, a week alone did me good and in the woods every day, which is good for my head.
