One day and a wake-up
« on: August 30, 2025, 07:13:28 AM »
Damn I am loving this cool weather we're getting here...sub-80's temps and very light showers these last few days before archery season opens should keep those deer out playing in the daylight hours a while longer.

I remember last year it was in the high 80's and low 90's the week before opening day (and stayed that way the next two weeks!). All the little critters were already full-on nocturnal by opening day and those last few minutes of light in the evenings was the only time I ever saw a deer during the season.

Feelin' all sorts of lucky this year!
No one ever tells you, that dark dirty little secret about this great sport of hunting I've taken up, that one day I would get excited seeing a pair of hairy balls on my computer screen. It seems that little nugget of information is left for each of us to come to terms with on our own.

I’m looking forward to getting out there early tomorrow and hopefully having all morning with this nice cool/cloudy weather to look for deer.
My youngest son enjoys rabbit hunting, since tomorrow is opener for that too, I’m thinking he might tag along with me.
When I inevitably choke to death on gummy bears, I’d simply like it said that I was “killed by bears”, and leave it at that

Sunrise pic from the stand?  Good luck!

Well, its not a sunrise pic but this is where I was sitting this morning at 5:30am waiting for the light.

It's only a half mile from home but I had to hike logging roads for an hour to approach from the downwind side. I was soaked in sweat by 5am and didn't think to bring a change of clothes so I sat in my hide shivering till 9:30am when I finally bailed.

All last year I had the opposite problem...I was hunting sundowns and sitting in a hide sweating the whole time.

Notice my trail camera at the base of the tree to the left in the above picture. Its a pretty active site but surprisingly this morning the only video was of the local Elk herd. There aren't many cows but I've recorded 4 different bulls within a half mile of here. In the video something out of frame to the left spooked the herd and they bolted right through my hide (above pic). The pic below is just before they bolted. (The bull elk pictured below would be just out of frame to the right of the herd)

I've also got a camera across the way to the right about 10 yards, facing this camera. When the herd bolted this guy apparently turned around and exited past my other camera. He was limping pretty badly on his right rear leg and moving slow though.

I'm only hunting deer though so the elk are safe....for now.

Spent the morning in my favorite tree stand where 1 of my trail cams has pics of 5-6 different bucks over the last month including one very nice 4 point that's been by on a few different mornings. No deer this morning but this little rag horn wandered by, could have easily shot him broadside at 22 yards or slightly quartering away at 28, never knew I was there. Sorry about the sideways pics.
