Good GMU's to hunt Coyote within 3 hours of Seattle?
« on: June 28, 2009, 07:50:45 PM »

Hello,

My friend and I are new hunters and would like to start practicing our skills as soon as possible.  We both have recently passed our hunter's ed course and I have been out on one guided turkey hunt so far.  So we are newbs to say the least.

From reading the regs it appears as though we can go and hunt some coyote.  Which is way cool with me.   Sounds fun.  I think I would like to save the pelts and stuff.  Can you make rugs out of them?

Anyhow, does anyone have any recommendations on good places to go within say 3 hours of the Seattle area?  2 hours would be even better...

Thanks!!

- John G.

North East Snohomish County, but the hides won't be good until November or later on the West side.

Get on I-90 and go east towards Ellensburg and knock on doors.  Just like any other hunting, predators are always better on private ground.  Don't be shy, i guarantee that you will find more people than not will let you hunt as long as they don't hunt they also.

If you are looking to save hides wait til winter. Their coats right now are in the ugliest stage. Their winter coats can be really beautiful...especially with a hole in it!!

Thanks for the replies!  Looking forward to getting me a coyote and the advice about the winter coats being better makes a lot of sense.

So, how do you guys hunt them?  Do you stalk them or do you sit in one place and call them in?

Oh, and do they show up in packs??   :yike:

I shot one last may on the east side, it was alone and the hide turned out perfect. Good luck hunting. ;)

:)Carry pork chops and smear bacon grease on your self. Sit in the bushes and make a sound like a wounded animal. They ALWAYS show up in packs of 7, you have to use an AR cause they attack.
If they jump you try rolling on your back and act submissive.

There are books out there about different techniques. If you look through the archives of this website in the varmint section, there are plenty of different questions just like yours.

You can spend all day just watching predator hunting videos for free.  (I know cause I do it all the time).  Here are a few links with hours of video and instruction.  I dont know if anyone has done a video hunting in heavy brush like we have here on the wet side of Washington but you can use some of the same techniques.
