Any ideas to the mechanics out there? Dodge Dakota
« on: September 25, 2025, 07:49:15 PM »
So I thought I would throw it up here to see if anyone has any insights.
2000 Dodge Dakota 4x4 4.7L V8
So I got the code the other day for P0622. Electrical issue/alternator/PCM issue. Then today while driving the volt meter gauge drops to nothing. So I assume the alternator is bad and its not charging the battery. Turn truck off, restart, voltage goes back up, but will quickly drop again.
This seems pretty straightforward to me for alternator. Having it tested tomorrow.
But my question is, could there be an overall problem with the serpentine belt or tensioner or another pulley in the system? I ask because there has been other issues.
My AC performance has dropped a lot. And if I am idling while running the AC, my temp will shoot up, I haven't let it overheat, but I know it would get there. Always turn the AC off when not freeway driving now.
Also I notice coolant odor outside the truck after driving. No visible leaks, no signs or symptoms of head gasket or heater core issues. The smell is only outside the truck. My suspicion is the radiator itself with that. But why am I only overheating while running AC AND idling at the same time?
Now with possible alternator issue and I replaced it a few years ago. Not that it couldnt wear out in that time, but it almost seems like there could be a common problem since all these things are operated by the serp belt.
Could my tensioner be bad? Serpentine belt is not that old either.
Anything I can check to be sure. I won't have the truck much longer so I dont want to throw a bunch of parts at it. But I was wondering about the tensioner.
Thanks to everyone for any insights

Some belt systems have a idle pulley, just a free spin pulley the belt rides on
Same with ac pulley, make sure it free spins while belt is off.

Does your truck have electric fan or normal fan.
Most electric fans will come on if your running ac.
