Underwater Elk Shed
« on: June 07, 2009, 01:53:25 PM »
Found a shed yesterday in the bottom of a creek. It must have fallen off as he jumped across. Now every time I see a stick submerged in a creek I will be doing a double take.

Man, I can smell that thing from here...Yuck.

I really regret not having a camera to take pictures of a five point elk shed I found two years ago in the middle of a huge wallow.  When I walked up on it, all I could see were the top two tines sticking up out of the mud.  It was something I doubt I'll ever see again.

Did you end up keeping that shed?

I did keep it and it does stink a little. I'll see if I can get the stink off of it somehow.

Let it sit outside for the summer and it should stop stinking.

A few years ago my uncle in Minnesota found an bull elk skull sticking out of the mud on the side of a river bank. He took it to a local geologist and the guy estimated it to be more than 300 years old. The sandy mud had preserved it really well. It was a beautiful bull, big 5x6.

There was an article in Bugle about a Elk skull and horns that were found in a bog, somewhere in KY or WV if I remember correctly. Said to be something like 500 years old.  :)

When I worked in Oly Nat park I found 4 sheds in the rivers and many more on the river banks where they would certainly be washed further into the river at some point...gravel bars and such...

Cool!
