Panhandle whitetail dates
« on: September 29, 2025, 12:50:59 PM »
Non-resident hunting unit 6. Had penciled in the trip over Thanksgiving, but work changed that. Every other 3 day weekend is open to me. Which dates would you suggest?

I’d hunt the 15th/16th. With that said I’ll have deer camp set (wall tent) the 7th to the 16th.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Up north I like the weekend before thanksgiving
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—
from violent people you save me.

Hunted heavy this morning in unit 6. Went through a check station on my way home around noon and they said only 3 animals had came down the st Joe all day. There are 100s of hunters out there, ghost town for critters.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Anyone hunted north Idaho yet? I’m headed there Saturday and wanted to see what people are seeing/thinking.
I can only hunt a few days.

Hunted unit 5 today. Over the last 3 days. Saw 12 moose. 3 bucks and 40 does.
Missed a long shot on a nice buck.
Did find out today that all of Stimpson land is now owned by the tribes and are off limits. I thought it was only a select few but was corrected. Makes hunting unit 5 so much harder.
Leaving back to Washington in the morning with tag soup.

You took the 8th-15th off and you are going home after 3 days? Every day going forward should get better and better and the weather also.

Lots of rub activity in 5...been hiking in that country a bunch the last week...it'll be really good hunting in about 5 days.

Spent today in 8,8A and saw a couple nice bucks come out of 8A.
I'm not serious hunting until this weekend. Weather looks good.

I am hoping we hit it just right no moon and some colder weather kicking in wish EHD didn’t hit but is what it is. This is my fun hunt for the year wall tent whiskey and some rutting bucks cruising and no pressure to have to get one.

I normally see 10 to 12 deer every day.  I'm in Unit 5, north of Worley.  In the past 5 weeks, I've personally seen ZERO deer and I've gotten 4 deer on 4 different cameras.  Two bucks, a doe and a yearling.  I have an extra doe tag this year that I am not going to even try to fill.  I found 6 dead deer this fall.  The whitetails down this low took a beating.  I'm hearing maybe 90% of the whitetail herd down low was wiped out by EHD.  I have heard they were not hit near as hard in the higher elevations.  Sadly due to my knee replacement surgery I cannot hunt the higher country this year and am stuck hunting near my place.  Not looking very promising for me this year.  I'm hoping the small elk herd that usually shows up around Thanksgiving is back by the first week in Dec for cow elk muzzleloader season.

I hunted unit 1 on the west side of Priest Lake over the weekend. I passed on two small bucks on Saturday morning. One was chasing a doe. I didn't see any other deer for the remaining weekend. There was a bit of rain on Sunday morning/early afternoon that I'm sure kept them down. I saw a lot of deer sign in every spot that I was at. Only a handful of shots rang out over the weekend. My first time hunting this area, and was happy to see less road hunters than I have seen cruising in the Colville National Forest the last few years that I have hunted there.

You going back out before the season ends? Pretty fun to hunt once the snow starts flying.

I wish I could. Have some family activities planned. I grew up hunting in southern Indiana. Having snow was the best time.
