Late Alta Muzzy
« on: October 15, 2025, 10:24:17 PM »
I was lucky to pull a late Alta Muzzy tag. I have had the tag twice before, ate the tag 1st time and I tipped over a nice one the 2nd. It will be weird without dad who passed 6 years ago, but I hope to have a fun hunt. So far I am solo and the guy that let me camp on his place has moved to Alaska. Not sure where I will call home camp but the wall tent will go just about anywhere. I am planning on taking the whole season and will be looking a 3 point or better while you guys are eating turkey. I have a pretty cool camera and hope to keep a running narrative with photos on this thread.

Well.
Day 1. Saw 1 whitetail doe....It was slow during my 1
previous hunting I always tried to get to the Black Pine Lake campground but the snow was too deep, so I crossed that off the bucket list today. Slow day saw no mule deer except the town locals. Ended the day with the tail/brake lights not turn off with the pickup off and locked at my tent.  Trouble shot a little and pulled the battery cables for the night.
Day 2 So far think I found the issue with brake lights as the rubber bumper is missing that attached to the brake pedal/switch. Made me late getting to "the spot" and another rig was already there. Kinda wandered around a little then went to Wintrop to see if 3 Fingers Jacks was going to open for thanksgiving, my kid might come join me for Thursday, they are closed for the week.  :bash: Stopped at NAPA to try to find something to use as that rubber bumper and the ABS Brake lights started blinking red.--Now sitting in Les Schwab. At least it's not Thursday but this is a frustrating start, I hope I only lose 1 day.

Check your taillights for cracks, if there is water in the bottom can make you lights stay on.
Just happen to me. Also sending you pm for a place to check.

Day 3 so far, ABS/Brake issue Les Schwab could not find an issue and the error did not come on again. At least no charge. Brake light issue is the missed rubber stop, annoying but workable. 2-4 Inches of new snow, spotted 3 more whitetail does up high. I think I am up way too high, shocked at the lack of any prints in the fresh snow.  Good times, great views and no fog so far.  Went to the top of Black Canyon glassed a lot. Only a couple prints between black top and top. Did see a wolf close in.

Best of luck to you! What type of truck do you have? I ask, because we are in Winthrop, and didn't know if we could be of some assistance.

I am rolling a Red F 250 2015. Hunted “hunter mountain.”  No deer no prints except a crap ton of wolf prints. It looked like a convention up top. Some huge, some big wolf tracks tons of little tiny ones. Had a whitetail buck just miss ramming me then almost bounced into someone’s shed when he took the big jump to miss m. It was spectacular. Saw two bucks but out of unit. One was cool. Saw two turkeys in a knockdown drag out in the middle of the road lol. Got pictures but will have to wait to downloa.

We have a 2017 F250 and had an ABS issue this Summer. A mouse chewed the wires. It messed a lot up though, not just the ABS. Cruise control wouldn't work plus other stuff. Sounds like you're still able to get around. Ours was the line at the front driver's side tire. I hope tomorrow brings you a dandy.

Well crap. Didn’t even see a buck that wasn’t on private property. Had some great tips from members here. Spent all day on day 6 on a hot tip, and felt like I was near or in the deer. New prints everywhere and wolf prints too of course. I hunted from Alta Lake to Twisp River Road. There were 2 honey holes but I really didn’t want to do combat hunting and or stepping on other tag holders hunts. My idea of a quality hunt is not asking land owners to shoot their pets. Wish there was a happy ending but hunted all 6 days. Was never at camp during daylight. Saw other tag holders grinding on day 6 as well. Hope someone tipped over a big one.

I had this tag last year and it was tough. Not what I thought it would be.

Sad to hear! Didn’t realize it had gotten that bad. It’s been on a steady decline for over 15 years. To bad really.

I feel for ya! My hunting partner & I had the tag about 7-8 years back and also struggled to find quality bucks. Found a ton of bone piles in one particular area where I watched a wolf chasing deer a few days later in the hunt. Have since heard wolves in the Squaw Creek drainage. After passing on a couple smaller bucks, I ended up taking a last day buck. I enjoyed the experience, but was disappointed in the "quality".

It’s really sad what the wolves have done to the deer in that unit.  It was literally my yard growing up. I didn’t even go up there this year.

My 17 yo had this tag. We were only able to hunt Thanksgiving and Friday due to basketball practices. He shot one Friday afternoon. 3x4 that was 24” wide and his nicest buck. We only saw forkys and then one other buck that was a 4x5. I was pretty surprised that up higher and having snow we didn’t see any tracks crossing the roads and found nothing for deer on the open hillsides. It worked out for us though and ended up being a quick fun hunt.

Had a rifle permit 2019 and 0 weather and was extremely mild, I saw hundreds of deer on my hunt. Couldn’t tell you how many bucks I saw.
