Power bait secrets......send it
« on: December 15, 2025, 07:54:15 AM »
With most big game seasons almost done.
Anybody got the secret formula, most popular, best scent, best color.
What's your go to power bait.
I've heard of guys mixing two power baits together.
Do you make a ball shape,or something else.

Just figured I'd start a post ,see if we got some top secret power bait stuff going on.

I'll start ......
I've been mixing cheese flavor, with other flavors.
With some success,but still experimenting.

The only real secret folks should know is to use a small enough hook to not overpower the buoyant force of the bait, aka, keep it off the bottom.

That is true, only takes a second. To make sure it's floating before you cast.

I hear garlic,corn,cheese are most popular,I don't really know.
I may start a poll at some point ,see what the favorite is.

They got turbo,super,42 percent stronger ,bunch of other gimmick stuff.

Absolutely the most common reason some people never get bit on power bait. Leader length, formula, and all that other stuff sort of matters and increases catch rates. But the bait not floating essentially guarantees zero fish.

That being said, I like to put the bait just above the hook rather than the on the hook itself. Seems to get the hook in the mouth, rather than totally swallowed. Either way you've legally got to keep the fish, but it's nice to not have to conduct gastric surgery between every fish.

I've never had much luck with it.  A small spoon usually out fishes it 5 to 1.

I always found two little globs rolled into one small egg shaped ball worked the best for me. I would take majority of a solid color then a little bit of one with sparkles and roll it into an oval. It could be 100% a farce and have no impact on the bite but it worked and I stuck with it.

18" leader with an egg sinker above. Thread half a nightcrawler on the hook from the open end. Use a Lindy blower to shoot a little air in the closed end of the worm. You'll outfish power bait.  :twocents:

Use really small treble hooks and small roll of power bait. You will loose a lot of hooks inside the fish but you retrieve the hooks when you clean them

I get the jars with about three different colors.  Small hook, 4-6 lb leader and you are set.

I usually use two rods with two different colors to see what's working that day. I use a #4 red Gamakatsu hook, sliding sinker with a good bumper. Leader length will depend on how tall the weeds are, I try to float the bait just above the weeds.

Don't fish for trout much anymore, but when I was younger, we would troll using this method all the time.  Was extremely effective for us and was a fun way to fish as well, since they would either slam it, or they would chew on it and you would have to wait for the rod to load before setting the hook.

Longer lighter leader often seems best. Slip sinker for sure. About a  #6 if using a single hook. Add a marshmallow or corkie if you need more floatation. A guy I knew swore by rolling the bait in extra glitter - claimed it would gradually fall off and attract fish. I've done it and caught fish, but hard to say if it was a difference maker.

 :yeah:
A garlic marshmallow below the bait on a slip sinker rig with about 30" of leader was our setup when we had to use soak baits

Bumble bee!!! is my go to, then Nymph, pink and orange about the same... I really like the power eggs in orange, pink, white... Never did much with the yellow... If they're hitting those it's a deadly combo... Put two on a #4  Gamakatsu red egg hook with 18" leader and a sliding sinker... Bonus is they stay on the line and are very reusable... Caught many a limit on two power eggs... They don't just fall off cause of weeds or a missed hook up...
I love you... I really do...

2 anchors from a boat worked best with Power bait for me.Keep the boat still, keep the line still and wait for it to start ripping out.

Did find a garlic flavor, and another jar of cheese.
I've been having good luck with cheese flavor.
I might have to order corn flavor online , can't find in store.
Bought the last cheese at my Walmart, had to look through all the jars to find it.

That garlic ,never tried it. Pretty excited, but I've been fishing past couple weekends.
So it might be awhile before I go again.

You're mostly talking about the hatchery fish anyway, so here's one I stumbled on... Doing the float-up-from-a-sinker method, I got lots of hits when I just started to reel in to check things. (Flat bait means you had a bite, round bait still untouched.) So, one time, when I was in a rowboat, I decided to do a slow troll with it. I mean... S....L.....O....W......... So slow that the bait floated slightly above the weight in the water column. So slow that even if the bait wanted to spin when I reeled it in it wouldn't spin when I trolled it.

Was in an I82 pond with lots of competition, and we LOADED UP. Way faster than anybody else was catching them.

Drifting PB works well for steelhead. Tie in yarn as usual and ball up your favorite color around that yarn.
