One thing we'll never know is how many people would of wanted tags this year even with the old system.
The pool of people wanting to hunt Idaho has been growing every year.
And with Montana's tag reduction announcement...
I'm guessing with or without the new system the ability to get a tag would of been harder than last year.

And is there a "bad" tag in Idaho... :dunno:

1st time I haven’t bought a tag since ‘99.   Many of those years I had two.

I’m not competing for a sh*tty general Idaho tag :chuckle:  There’s other stuff to do.

I completely agree with this statement, people need to remember at the end of the day it’s just a general tag. It comes down to what you make of it, but there are hunts in other states out west with bigger bucks and bulls and more of them  :twocents:

 :yeah:

The real beauty of hunting Idaho has been the controlled hunts. Not using a point system and chances for nonresident were really good and great when compared to Washington system. Not sure if that will be the case still.

100% especially going in blind! There is plenty of tags guys pulled that will come for a week and not see or hear an elk or only see a handful of deer and nothing worth notching a tag on… even some of the “good ones”

Give some people some years and donating $204 every year and nothing to show for it and people will say no thanks. Hell lots dont apply in NV due to the $184 non refundable fee yet in NV people get bonus points and you will draw a tag someday. Idaho is nothing no points to guarantee you tag in the future. Id be willing to bet that a huge % of people applying for elk and deer tags were in the southern areas of ID. Most dont or will not apply or go back to the selway, lolo and middle fork if they do draw once.

That's my thinking is a well and hopefully they don't revert to a point system. Lolo was a gimme tag in the past...  The guys going to unit 1 for elk are in for a treat, especially if they've never been in the unit

There ain’t any elk there anyhow. You know that first hand. Wolves ate them all to a point there’s been hardly any wolves killed this winter thus far.

I’m curious how many people either don’t buy the tag they drew or return their tags later this year after doing more research on the area they drew. I have had a few people from around the country reach out to me about the tags they have drawn seeking advice and they are terrible tags that are in tough areas to hunt. Flat landers from the Midwest are heading to the Selway for their first ever mule deer hunt and others with unit 5 tags thinking they are going on great mule deer hunts do their first ever experience in Idaho…

And as someone who knows the state and has friends that live in the state that I usually hunt with every year. I am researching other states to apply for now that I didn’t draw 🤷‍♂️

im only applying for the area ive been hunting for 10 years, with my friends who live in that unit.
ill continue to likely apply, and if i dont draw elk, ill just go hunt spring bears.
i do think a LOT more people jumped in because they didnt want to feel left out of the hype that occurred with this new process.
regardless, there are going to be a LOT of people learning what STEEP actually means  :chuckle:

That last point is one of the reasons I think Idaho will remain a big draw - you can find out whether or not you're successful and then burn points in another state if you're not.  Other states have overlapping draws with big delays in results coming out so it's increasingly hard to know if you're going to be successful or not.  With limited time off and family obligations I really value having an out-of-state 'sure thing' hunt lined up

Disagree. Those same guys aren't passing on a 2.5 y/o deer (maybe even 1.5)  if that is all they see; after flights, drives, $ spent....the little ones will be taken.
