Called in my first bobcat!
« on: January 19, 2026, 07:26:24 PM »
It's only took dozens of years.   To be fair I didn't hunt the thicker cover where they typically are.

Simple story.   Was my 4th set of the day.  Was waiting for my ride to pick me up after my 3rd set,  so put the call out 30 yds on a really overgrown skidder trail, ran cotton tail in distress for 4 min.   I see the cat peak our of the brush 70 yards away and took the shot with the 2506.  Hit broadside behind the shoulder and lost sight of it.   Walked over and found it about 5 feet back.   Then carried it back to an intersection and waited for my dad to pick me up.   Less than 4 minutes he was there.   Asked him "what's that thing laying there?"  Now looking at full body mounts.

Now I need a cougar!

Whole different technique. Start with a martini and then...

Those cougars are too rich for my blood.  Might need a cheaper attractant, like a white claw.

I never have, as I have never killed one, but does anyone on here eat Bobcat meat?  Curious what thoughts were for those that have eaten it.

I've eaten from a few. Couple younger cats tasted like dry pork. Another cat tasted like dry pork with piss in it.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I'd be ok with the couple younger ones then, maybe not so much that last one... :chuckle:

I've eaten several bobcats. All were from old, large males, and all were good. I'm sure that individual bobcats taste better or worse than others, like meat from most kinds of wild animals.   Bobcats taste kind of like lynx, only lynx were better to my taste.  :)  Similar to cougar; with meat that turns white when cooked, like pork.  We've done medallions of bobcat tenderloin with eggs for breakfast and bobcat "steaks" in a gravy.  All of the pieces are small, and are easy to overcook and dry out.  I try to cook them barely done.

Good for you to call and kill one! You have joined the club! I enjoy calling cats more than any other kind of hunting.
