Direct drive reels are the bomb.

never used them but had a few that I got rid of back in the 80s.  Regret that move.

There is a learning curve for sure, but wow, once you get over that hump, it’s all you’ll wanna do. One trick I use is I’ll “slap” the reel to get it spinning for super fast retrieves because turning it one crank at a time takes forever, but a full reel will retrieve faster than a reel low on line

Bought those in 1974 I think it was. I think I got the rod at Pay Less or whatever it was back then for $18. Bought the reel from the sports writer for the Bremerton Sun back then for $25. I would still be using the reel for mooching at the Point but it's not fun when a seal grabs your fish.  :bash: That's the main reason I quit fishing there.

A good Islander will run you $5-600
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."
Theodore Roosevelt 1899
