Baiting Cougars?
« on: February 15, 2026, 08:55:56 PM »
Greetings,

Just listened to a podcast with a guest Joe Lewis, a cat hunter from eastern Oregon. He discussed a time he killed a cat and hung the game bags in a tree, when he came back to retrieve the bags, there was another cat in the tree eating the meat. From that point on he exclusively baits for cats vs calling and is very successful. Has anyone tried intentionally baited for cats ? What was your experience ?

I am constantly baiting in lions while baiting for bobcats and I am positive I could kill them if I desired to. I have no time to sit on a bait, however.

Likely we're already there unfortunately!

Yes it looks like WDFW's definition of large predator/carnivore is Wolf, Cougar, Black and Grizzly bear, no bobcat or coyote though. Very interesting....

What if the cat identifies as as an herbivore?

Aren't bears omnivores?

Guess if I pack in a container of water and place it underneath the bait I would be okay then since it doesn't mention anything about attracting them to water.

Would “land” mean the ground ? Hung 6-8 feet up in a tree considered land ?

Intent is a hard one to prove. Baiting bobcats and coyotes is legal.
Bigfoot is real. He hides in my pants.
