What pants are you guys rocking in the peninsula?
« on: February 17, 2026, 05:57:32 PM »
I’ve been out here for a few years now and what I’d wear hunting pretty much any wear else, just ain’t cutting it. It’s not the wet, the wet I can stand, it’s just everything getting shredded whenever I’m in the slightest proximity of blackberry, which is everywhere. Any advice would be great.

I wear those super heavy double front carharts, green or brown.

Downside is they DO get a little heavy when you’re bushwhackin’ and they get soaked.

I got a pair of filson single tin pants for beating brush when they were 50% off earlier this year.  They're heavy and stiffer than what I'm used to, but that's the tradeoff for durability. They're also bomb proof and waterproof, though ironically I never needed them in the wet this year, so didn't test that. They have a great reputation with loggers, which says a lot for handling brush.

 :yeah:

Ran these in SE AK for several seasons and loved them! Now I wear Sitka Mountain pants, and stay away from the blackberry as much as possible!  :twocents:

The best combo I've found if your in the brush is Carhartt storm defender bibs with a merino base layer plus a PVC rain jacket. Pvc bibs shred too easily. I'm in the process of shredding a pair of viking rain pants that were similar to the carhartt but cheaper and thinner. The storm defender used to be better, full zip from the hip to the ankles plus buttons. Now they are half zip with velcro in place of buttons. I also use gaiters and if its real nasty, caulked Hoffman rubber boots. If you move steady to avoid sweating, you will stay 90% dry. I like tin pants, they are good in wet brush and thorny brush but can get pretty cold and wet by the end of the day. I wear wool pants in the real cold.

When possible, I try to avoid brambles altogether. But sometimes I simply don't get that luxury (usually tracking or attempting to catch up with elk on their trails). If I end up in the stuff, I just try to be careful and methodical with each step to avoid getting snagged. I would imagine it looks quite amusing from afar. I would rather be comfortable in my Sitka Mountain pants or Kuiu Attack pants than trap my sweat inside of bibs. Just by trying to avoid the brambles as best as possible, I've managed to use the same pairs of pants for many seasons now.

Where I seem to struggle the worst with thorned vegetation is out in the middle of a clearcut, where I'm constantly dragging my boots through nets of low lying blackberry that hide in the grass and downed limbs.

Also, the typical Himalayan blackberry bushes are one thing. The cutleaf evergreen blackberry bush is another beast entirely. That stuff is awful. I'm doing an about face 180 whenever I run into clumps of that stuff, no questions asked.

Been wearing Filson single and double tin chaps for pheasant hunting for decades.

I wouldn't call them waterproof, but they do turn stickers away.  Over my regular Riggs utility jeans or over my hip boots when hunting marsh ponds.

Been really liking the regular Wrangler outdoor pant you can get at walmart, I've tried maybe 5 different high end hunting pants this past bear season (Sitka, Kuiu, Prana, ect.) and go back to the wrangler pant. They're light fairly durable so when they do get torn, I don't really care, just patch em cause the pants cost about $22. Call me a poser but I wear Kuiu to starbucks and wragler in the backcountry. Unless were talking cold weather, than thats a whole other conversation.

I think for the value in hot to moderate climate they’re the best bang for the buck. Once you get around freezing temps they do get a little cold but if you’re moving it’s still good. My favorite part is they dry super fast. I think I have around 12 pairs of pants.

I live on the west side of the peninsula and worked in the woods my whole life so I know what works. Tingley Iron Eagle rainwear. Tough and light. They are the successor to Tingleys Black Iron. That only came in black. I got the new stuff in green.
Here's a tip to avoid sweating. Buy the stuff big and leave your coat unbuttoned. That provides airflow. I like enough room in the pants to have my arms at my side in the pants and still have some slack.
Avoid any PVC rain clothes. Too heavy.

I use to always wear double front Carhart or similar jeans. I also have some Filson Tin pants and both do just fine for hunting purposes when dealing with briers. But I tend to walk a lot and those are both just uncomfortable to wear all-day, especially as they get wet. So now I typically wear First Lite Sawbuck Pants. It is there double front brush pant. I think they are very comfortable and not perfect for briers, but a lot better than any technical hunting pant. I find the Sawbuck brush pant to be a great middle ground between okay in briers and comfortable for all day lots of hiking/dries out quicker (not quick).

I would be wearing wool.😉

What was that line of camo wool products cabelas used to offer? Haven't seen t in a while

But as far as wool goes, there's a thousand armies worth of quality surplus wool gear out there that is tried and true

Personally if I'm hunting wet stuff I'll just wear my xtra tuffs and dark green grundens but I've also spent to much time in Alaska  :tung:

I once had a millionaire say "it's not abiut how expensive of gear you can buy, it's a game of spending as little as possible and still being comfortable and functional"

Wooltimate fleece?

Yea pretty sure that is what he is referring to, Wooltimate Fleece from Cabelas.  Although, I have a set that I used once for a cold weather hunt, and they are pretty heavy when dry, I can't imagine how heavy they would be after pounding west side brush on a rainy day.

Good info on this thread. Heavy wool pants are more bombproof, but they are so hot on my bod that I wear light thin wool dress pants from Goodwill.  They are cheap and if they get too torn I toss them.

Like some others, I do all I can to avoid the stuff that tears clothes, including a wooden walking stick I use to push vines out of the way.  I carry pruners and mini saw but rarely use them except maybe when retrieving a critter that died in a bush.

I always wear soft shell gaiters, worn inside of pant legs in wet conditions so the wet pants don’t drain and wick water inside the gaiters into boot tops.  If it is super pouring I will go to rain pants, though don’t like to wear them.

I don’t mind getting wet for the day if I can sleep dry.  My son has an entire dry outfit, boots and clothes, for each day he hunts elk on the wet end. He throws a sopping outfit in the back of his truck each evening and starts each morning with a dry set.

It’s pretty much the warmest stuff I’ve ever worn in my life. I can’t imagine wearing it in any weather here except the absolute coldest.

Cabela's used to make some great wool clothing, they called it their "legacy" line.  It was 100% wool but machine washable.  I've got a shirt and pants I've been wearing west side deer hunting for close to 15 years now.  Sadly, like everything good they've made in the past, it got dumped when bass pro took over.

I've had a set of their "outfitter" waterproof lined wool (the gray camo stuff, but not the "wooltimate" type), it wasn't really that warm for how bulky it is.  Plus when it got wet, it got really, really heavy, and smelled like a wet dog :yike:

Blacktail hunting in the rain, unless I'm expecting a real downpour, I just don't usually wear rain gear.  Wool outer clothes and merino base layers are plenty keep me warm and comfortable until it's completely saturated.  I used to wear a light rain jacket sometimes, but now I just pull out the heavy duty Grundens rain suit in the really nasty stuff.  The upside is that if I start sweating, I know I'm moving too fast.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
