High Buck Hunt Questions???
« on: July 16, 2009, 02:07:08 PM »
Anyone ever hunted any of the Olympic Penn. areas during the High Buck?  I hunted the Glacier Peak Wilderness last year and didn't see any deer, but I did take a bear out of there.  I was considering trying the Olympics this year to do something new.  I have done a couple of hikes over there around Marmot Pass, but there is always a ton of hikers.  Anyone know of any other access points woth checking out that aren't as crowded?

Is the Olympic even open during the high hunt?  I don't think so, unless you're talking general season...  I've never been through there so I can't help ya out there.

Yes.

"Alpine Lakes, Glacier Peak, Pasayten, and Henry Jackson Wilderness Areas, and wilderness areas on the Olympic Peninsula, and Lake Chelan Recreation Area".

I've hunted the Buckhorn wilderness several times, and see deer every time I go.

I've done a ton of backpacking up there.  Col Bob wilderness is straight up, and I've never seen deer up there.  A few hunters.

Brother's Wilderness is also a narrow place to hunt.  Cliffs on both side of the rivers, not easy hunting.  Good fishin' though.

I was going to try Buckhorn this year.  I'll see y'all up there.

The upper duckabush is really fun...of course 6 miles in you're in the ONP, and you can't hunt, and that is where the elk, bear, and grouse come out of nowhere.  I swear they can read the boundary markers!  Just like they can read the regs and know when to disappear the day before opening season!

There's also 'Wonder Wilderness' which has no roads or trail to it...some bushwacker could really find some untouched area's to hunt in there...However, that's a little ambitious, and a great way to get lost.

I have seen some masher deer in the Colonel Bob around moonshine flats. There are plenty of deer to be hunted. Not much pressure either. TOugh trail up though. I know nothing about The Brothers.

Colonel bob is rugged, pretty steep back up in there. Saw a few good bucks in that general area a few years back. Have not been up there in awhile. Nice thing about up there not to many people venture off the trails looking for rougher country, you should have it all to yourself.

Thanks for all of the input and advice.  For you guys that have been in the Buckhorn Wilderness...  Is there a reliable water source at Camp Mystery or Boulder Camp in September?

I've hunted the Paseyton up behind Mazama near Winthrop.  Not a lot of pressure and it is nice and open east side terrain with big Mule deer.  I'm deployed so can't go this year.  If you need directions let me know and I'll see what I can do to help you out.  Don't have my map here with me, but could get you on the area.

Heres the deal there are lots of great places in the Olympics everywhere you go your gonna have deer you just need to adapt to the terrain. Marmot pass is a nice area gets hit hard with people on horses. I live in Quilcene right at the base of the olympics and have hunted the high every year with great success. Its not like hunting low land black-tails the deer up there are tougher then anything you'll see. Any questions just pm me
Will hunt for food
