Need Fall Rio Guide or Info
« on: July 12, 2009, 09:48:41 PM »
I have two people from idaho who would like to kill Rio's on the fall hunt here in WA. My hunting is for Merriams so I can't help them, is there anyone who would want to help them as a guide or offer info.

Units 127, 130, and 133 should be open with over-the-counter fall tags.

133 is definitely rios, I am not sure about the other two units but I think they are rios too.

Dale if you have property for them lined up, I might be able to help.  What are the dates they are looking at going?  Or do you need someone to provide the whole kit and caboodle?

I am just trying to find them some help. Since I won't have any involvement I just want to help them out, I'm not in it for any money.

Unit 133 is Rios and is a general season, whereas the other two units mentioned are not Rio per the state ... the Blues are Rios but require drawing a permit (which was done in June).

Most of unit 133 is private, but there is a little DNR/state land, and I suggest that they may want to get some maps that show public land. They may want to also travel some of the "canyons" north of Hiway 2 and talk with some of the private landowners as soon as possible. if they get permission to hunt private property, they should be sure to bring a nice landowners thank you gift when they hunt this fall (whether successful or not). It doesn't have to be expensive ... could be deer or elk steaks or burger, salmon or trout, a bottle of liquor, a gift card to the local hardware store or restuarant or beauty parlor,  etc. The "scouting trip" will also allow them to become more familar with the area, ways to approach the "turks", obstacles, etc (ie: scouting for success).

I have had permission to hunt a couple private farms in unit 133 for years ... the landowners extended families hunt the weekends, but weekdays are mine .... the landowners are at best selective and the only reason I can hunt there is because of my friendship with one of the landowners close and trusted friends (ie - the local game warden). Most of these farmers/rancers are fairly generous with permission if approached right and treated like they should be treated.

Yes indeed .... Kurt, JoAnne and both kids are all very good people. They have gotten me permission to hunt some great properties in both Harker and Indian Canyons.  Seems all the canyons hold fair amounts of birds, and I have been lucky enough to have some good success over there .... I usually take a bottle of crown (or some salmon) as a thank you to them too. Usually spend at least one evening visiting and having a drink with them while there ... and of course, listening to all the birds near their home. I have alot of respect and admiration for the entire family (whether they ever got me permission or not).

Agreed, I have worked with Kurt back when Lincoln County Longbeards put on such a kick @$$ NWTF Banquet.  Great people.  I started hunting Harker's many many years ago.  Killed some really nice toms back in there.  Love chasing turkeys in there.

I worked with JoAnne on the NWTF Wa State Chapter BOD ... what happened with the RD(s) was a shame (and similar happened with me the end of March).  I love that whole area and the people. Probably will be there Monday and maybe Tuesday during the early fall trying for another Rio tom (probably staying in a room or my trailer at the Black Bear Motel).

Good luck, I made contact with the two folks from Idaho and they sure seem like nice folks.  They are not picky so hopefully I can put them on a couple of Rios.   :)

So do you know Ken Staley, Joe Witsch, or Rick Gronkowski?

Probably not ... met some people hunting with Yelp this year that know Kurt, but my memory is to short to remember their names.  Think they call it "old timers".  :bash:

TD Thats OK..It happens to the best of us..

Machias...I know everyone you seem to know..very nice guys.  They come out to the camp every Spring.  Haven't seen Rick that often.  Anyways good people. My wife and I started the LC chapter 8 years prior to Kurt/Joanne taking it over.  Harker is a blast to hunt.  I am hearing the hatch was bad..what have you guys noticed?

I have three hens coming through my yard, one hen has one chick, but the other two have 7 and 8.  I have heard from another gentleman I work with yesterday that he has tons of poults at his place.  I have been hearing the hatch was good to excellent in this area, Four Lakes/Cheney/Medical Lake area.

Did you guys have some bad storms, that's probably what killed our hatch the previous two years up north from you?
