Son's First Deer
« on: December 02, 2007, 01:28:44 PM »
My 11 year old son got his first buck this year.  We had lots of close calls previosly but just couldn't get a buck to sit still long enough for him to take a good shot.  5 minutes of legal shooting light to go on the last day and this little guy came out trailing 4 does.  We had enough time to get my shooting sticks out and give him a good rest.  He took the heart right out of that buck at 75 yards with his .243  The buck dropped in his tracks.  I am not sure who was more excited!!!!  We hit it pretty hard this season and he was getting a little frustrated with opportunities that could not be capitalized on and the lack of seeing deer which is quite typical for blacktail in our neck of the woods.   Real nice to see when persistence pays off.  No monster by any stretch but a great first buck and hopefully the beginning of a lifelong hunting journey.

Great job for both of you!  My 11 year old will be hunting next year. He has been taggin along on grouse and turkey hunts, and will try taking game himself next year with my guidance. Did your son take his hunter education this year, or did you opt for the deferred program?

Thanks for all the nice comments.  Iceman, as far as the Hunter Saferty goes, he actually took the class two years ago and we've just been doing a bunch of duck hunting the past couple of years.  They said he was probably a little young to take it but they let him in.  He only missed one question on his test.  I see that a lot of other States have age restrictions before a kid can hunt like 12 years old (or something like that)  Really surprizes me that Wa, of all states!!!, let kids start hunting without any age restrictions; at least as far as I klnow.  We spend a lot of time shooting and on gun safety and he is never more thatn 5 feet away from me when in the field.  I've found that it is a good way to spend quality time with the kids when they're at the age that all their buddies want to sit in front of the computer and play them damned video games.

Congrats to your son!  Nice buck for the first one.  Good eats too.  Sure he'll be in for many more successful trips with dad.

Blacktailer, thanks. Mine has been shooting at camp, is a natural (with a scope), understands you cannot call back a shot, and that his shot can kill. I cant wait to get both my kids into this hunting heritage.
