Twist
« on: July 15, 2009, 07:43:39 PM »
A few years ago I got two CVA Mountain Stalkers in the .54 cal.  With the powerbelt bullets they were sweet shooting guns.  Sadly I need to replace both barrels.  I found out CVA sold their inventory to Deer Creek Products in Waldron, IN.  I got a hold of Deer Creek and they have American made barrels that will fit my Mountain Stalkers but only in the .50, which is fine, but the old barrels had the 1:24 twist and these will have ....I think he said 1:40 (does that sound right or is it 1:48?)  Either way what can I expect with the slower twist?  Thanks for any thoughts.

1;48 is a pretty standard rate of twist for muzzleloaders. Its kind of an in between rate.Fast enough to stabilize most conical bullets, and slow enough to stabilize roundballs. It's a do it all rate of twist, kinda like modified choke in a shotgun ,it does it all okay. My Lyman Trade Rifle has 1:48 and I am quite okay with it as is. :) I shoot 400 grain homecast maxi balls in it, on top of 70 grains of pyrodex select.  Hope this is a help to you. ;)

I have the .54 cal Lyman Trade rifle and use the conical bullets. They shoot awesome through it, the 1:48 twist is perfect for the conicals

General Rules Of Thumb On Muzzleloader Barrel Twists:

1:66 - Patched round ball; generally will not stabilize a conical or sabot.

1:48 - Conical or a patched round ball; usually best with the conical. Sabots generally don't shoot as well.

1:28 - Sabots or conicals.

Your barrel should have the twist marked on it somewhere. Most in-lines are the 1:28 twist and most traditional muzzleloaders are the 1:66 or 1:48 twists. However, every gun is different and even with the "wrong" rifling twist, it may shoot one or the other bullet or ball very well.
