Barnes bullet question...

For any of you who are familiar with reloading the barnes tsx or ttsx bullets...  In their advertisement they say that their bullets are grooved for lower pressures.....  Is that a positive thing at the expense of velocity?  Do they shoot at a lower pressure because the explosion is escaping around the bullet? (hence the less velocity)....  Or have any of you thought about this....  Master reloaders step up

Without lead Barnes bullets are longer for there weight so there is more friction. To get away from the added friction which causes pressure they created the grooves. You won't lose anything by useing TSX bullets. They are great. Very accurate. I love them.

I believe that the original bullets were solid (no grooves) and the pressures increased, and you had to use Barnse data and only their data.  I was reading where the grooves actually bring their bullets back to pressures equal to other bullets.

HOWEVER, I do not and never have used Barnes bullets.

With out getting into the tech end of it. I use the TTSX in my 7mm mag great bullet. 2 deer in the neck 2 yrs in a row.

Thanks guys....  I bought the ttsx for my 7mm ultra mag.  My hunting partner was giving me crap about the bullets shooting slower....  I want a fast flat shooting accurate bullet for 400 to 500 yard shots so I am going with the 140 grain barnes as they have great weight retention.

You generally can shoot the Barnes stuff faster cuz you can use more powder due to the lessened pressures. 

With a 7 RUM you might consider a heavier bullet.  With a RUM you have the powder capacity to easily accomodate a much heavier bullet than a 140. Not suggesting it so much for weight retention/penetration but for better long range capability.  I'm not totally up on what they offer in .284 but if they got a 160 in a BT you should be able to "easily" push that well over 3300 fps and have a higher BC for better downrange performance.  I'm getting over 3300 in my 300 win w/ a 168.

Anyone have any exp. with tthe MRX bullets? I have read that they are shorter.

I've used TSX's in a few diffrent calibers and I really like them, they've shot very well. The old style X's fouled badly for many folks. The copper alloy barness uses is softer then most other bullet's copper jackets. When Barness came up with the TSX, the grooves are to cut down on the bearing surface and reduce fouling. As I said, I like the TSX's but I wont use them for any of my long range rifles, the grooves ruined the BC of those bullets.

Well the adds for Barnes now show that the spider bull was taken with the Tipped TSX. So it has to be the best out there for this year

I've had great luck with both the TTSX (Tipped Triple Shock) and the MRX. While working with my Father-in-Law's 300Wsm, it went from shooting 2" groups at 100yds to .75" groups when I started loading the Barnes bullets. He never shot anything with either bullet out of that rifle though. The MRX shot well, but boy are they expensive!! No other bullet shot near the same point of impact, so it would have cost a fortune to practice with them in that gun. My Father-in-Law did shoot a decent sized 2pt with the MRX out of a 308 Win last year. At 125yds, the deer didn't react to a solid double lung, but only ran 20yds.  The bullet definately did some damage, the deer just didn't respond to it.

I've also loaded the 270 TSX in my 375 Ruger. They shot well at around 1", but the Accubonds shot better so I went with them instead.

With all of the loads, the bullets were moving just as fast as a similar weight bullet of conventional design out of the same guns.

I think I can get 3600 fps out of the 140 grain ttsx.  If I can get 3500 out of the 150 grain ttsx I may go with that....  Trying to get a flat shooter...  They don't make a bigger bullet in the ttsx. 

The 140 gr bullet has similar ballistics as the 300 win mag with a 180 grain bullet.  But it shoots ALOT flatter.  The 150 would be a step up if I can make it work in my rifle...  I'll try some of those...
