1911 Colt Commander question?
« on: July 23, 2009, 02:01:31 PM »
Hey guys trying to find a little info on the 1911 Colt Commander in 45acp.  Just picked one up as a good deal from a guy and can't seem to figure out when it was made by doing a serial number search.  It has the LW prefix, just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction to determine approx date of manufacture.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

LW means light wight.  I'll try to find the link for dating your gun.

Try this link.  If you can't find it here, post up the serial number with a couple of xx's on the end of it and I'll do some more digging.

Yeah I looked there and couldn't figure it out, as none of the serial numbers have the "LW" prefix to be honest.  My SN is 440xx, five digits with LW preceeding that.

Here is the site I was looking for.  This helped me on dating my older brownings.  Looks like yours is 1964.

Any other markings?  "MarkIV", "Series 70", "Series 80", "E" etc.  Does it look like this one?

Well it's got more of a wood appearance grip and is blued, but is of the same size and barrel length as the picture you've posted, but no other markings.  Simply Colt Commander on the left side of slide.  Right side of frame has the SN, and right side of slide has the place of manufacture.  It is not knurled around the front of the grip below the the trigger guard as the one in the picture.
