raffle hunt
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:56:00 PM »
well boys and girls, I am all packed up and loaded for the 3 day backcountry hunt that I donated for the youth fund back in Jan/Feb  :dunno: I have a terrible memory, but for some reason I always know when hunting season starts
So the hunt was going to take place this opening weekend, but the berries up where we will go are not quite ready yet. I am going up tomorrow morning for 3 days of scouting. Hopefully we can get a bear or two picked out for next weekends raffle winner!
I got to tell ya, I have my pack loaded up with everything and it's tipping the scale at 29lbs. :o I traded in some gear over the break for lighter equipment, but man, it's seems too light? I guess I will find out.
I have only tested the new stuff on a few over nighter's and one 2 day scout trip. I haven't seen a bear yet though.
Good luck to all on the opener
be safe, have fun, and try not to get over heated (specially if you down one)

When my pack is too light that usually means I have room for a couple 16 oz beer cans.
This time of year is nice because you can leave a lot of bulky clothes at home.  Water seems to be the biggest weight and space, and if you can plan your where you fill up your water bottle, you can move pretty fast and light.

I'm guessing that 29 lbs doesn't count your rifle, sling, ammo, binoculars?

Have fun!

Kurt

I agree... water is the biggest weight/space.  I love having a water filtration device.  It really simplifies the water problem.  Great luck on your hunt.

you guys are right, and at 8 lbs a gallon, water is surely heavy. I will always pack it though, 2 years ago up in the goat rocks, I thought I would do just that, drink it when I came to it.  :bdid: It was fairly hot out and I was dehydrated and blew a head gasket while still climbing. I was in bad shape, had to break out the jet boil on a left over snow drift. I was drinking it before it cooled down, I didn't even get the tent out I was so beat, just kinda folded the sleeping bag over me and hoped a mountain lion would put an end to my misery! It might sound retarded, but this is the reason I will ALWAYS carry water with me.

Yep.  Goat rocks will do that to you as soon as you get above snowgrass flats.  We were up there a couple weeks ago, but there was still plenty of snow melt below old snowy.
