No success yet.  I did call in an unknown last year that may have been a bear.

my son has always really been into the hunting....I started him by carrying him on my shoulders though the woods....he killed his first bear at 8. Anyway he had 2 friends (brothers), one was 16 and could drive, they were all very knowledgeable but my wife and I, and the other kids parents would only let them take 1 rifle and shotguns for grouse and bear hunting.

One time they were bear calling and this bear came running in snapping its teeth, they shot it, and then added a few rounds, they were still talking pretty fast when they got home.   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

There is a lot more to the story but you need to hear it from them, scared the jimny right out of them.... :chuckle:

Point being, I think it's a good idea to have a friend, you never know what could happen. Did you hear about the grizzly sow that attacked the guy in WY looking for sheds....

If you know its there that works fine.....what if the situation is like that grizzly in WY....tore the guy up before he could get out his pistol. :dunno:

odds are slim of something like that, but this guy sounds new to bear hunting....

yes Ive had one come after me just hiking in put a 270 in its face at point blank..black bear,we tracked the bear in the pouring ran and never found it...I would suggest reading bear attacks...the largest bear Ive taken was at ten feet.I like the close encounters thats why I call in thick areas..you need to have your wits about ya..

I've called in 15 so far.  I have called in probably half of them by myself.  You sure don't fall asleep while hunting.   ;)

You can also get an electronic caller so the bear is focused on it instead of you.  When Im calling alone I put the wind in my face.  That way if a bear comes in behind me it might smell me and take off.   :dunno:  You can call in lots of critters while calling so be ready for kitty cats also.  You might be looking for dark shapes and not see the big tan one coming in on you.   :yike:

I like a coarser call then rabbit.  I have called them in with Steve Jones' javelina calls  :)  I am excited to use Bearmanric's calls this fall, they sound excellent.

Notice the first video how the bear is coming on a string when the guy is calling and stops when he stops.  You need to call nonstop until you can see them.  Most likely had he called again it would have come right into to his lap.  That's not pointed out to be critical, I only bring this up because if your cold calling and it's thick you may have bears coming, but if you stop alot of times they will stop and lose interest and wander off and you'll never know they were there.

+1.  The coarse voice will usually require more air out of you, so have a call that doesn't use much air so you can catch your breath, and not pass out.

I call ALOT, Bearmanric called in my sons first bear.
Rabbit call will work, more like a jack then a cotten tail, a little deeper sound. Ever heard abear cub? thats what I try to sound like.
Calf elk calls or fawn sounds too. or you could try to sound like a big bucket of honey or pan of bacon :chuckle: :chuckle:
Bears are not allowed to sneak up and eat you here, that would be baiting.
