Bout pooped myself.
« on: August 07, 2009, 09:39:02 PM »
Always bought a tag but never hunted bear. Tonight I went out to a place I have seen 10 or so this yr to find one and did. Heard something feeding. Sat and waited. Could only see about 15 yrds either way. He came in grunting, Tearing at stumps and raising hell. Long story short, he went to my right at about 25 yrds :'(. The only time I actually saw him, he was behind a brush pile that I could not see through. All that was visible was the top 6 inches of his back. At one point he was within 10-15 yrds, and I thought for sure there was two, which you all know my next conclusion.  :yike: figured it to be a sow and cub.
Now, I have buggled and shot a lot of bulls and a lot of deer as well, and they do not compare to the adrenalin I had racing tonight. That bear may as well have been black tar heroin. And now I'm a damn junkie.

Which brings me to ask after he cut my trail and burned out, u experianced guys think calling would be pointless? Next would be should I have started calling if he would have gone a 180?
Anythoughts or tips?
WB

It would have to be a stand as the terrain is flat.

After he cut your trail and did a 180 out of there, calling would be pointless in my opinion. Although I have not called in bears before I have had them cut my track and the next thing you see is them going over the next ridge.

maybe find the closest drainage and come in from a different direction to call, you never know

I would return and call for sure. It may have been pointless right after  he spooked but going back and trying again would be wise. As I read it, you did not call him in to begin with... correct? If yes, then he should not be call shy when you try again. Some bears will come to a call several times and hold back for various reasons. If the connect the call to a human then it can be more difficult but not impossible. Various voices will attract & re-attract a bear. Change your location a little possible, make sure the wind is in your favor, etc. You know the routine.

I called in a bear twice in one evening, both times from downwind. It surprised me having a bear sneaking from behind me. We went back the next morning and BTKR called him in again and got the shot.

Again, if I read this correctly, you have a good chance of calling him in again, so go for it
