Headed out from B'ham to Port Renfrew last Friday afternoon. This was the first time I had ever boated around Vancouver Island. Normally we just book the Ferry and head a little further north. Anyway, the ride out was a little ruff shortly after Victoria so we stayed in Sooke Friday night. Saturday morning we ran the rest of the way and cut out to Swiftsure bank to start of the trip. It was pretty much non-stop action for Kings, Coho, Pinks, Hali's and Lings all weekend long.
The biggest King of the trip was 35lbs, and we managed a few silvers in the 10-12lb range. All the Hali's where Chickens but that was what we were after. We caught and released a bunch of Kings in the 6-18lb range, and 80% of the coho where wild fish and released.
The poor King that ended up in the prop took a wrong turn after being released. It was a little feeder about 10lbs. When I tailed him and pulled the hooks, he shot under the boat and ran right into the prop. This killed the kicker motor and sent out a nice little chum trail. I have to say this is the first time I had seen this. Normally they swim away from the boat.
Out of Saturday, Sunday, and half of Monday we had 6 or 7 triple headers and to many doubles to count. I have to say this was the best saltwater experience for sheer numbers I have ever had.
Now its time to get geared up for Tuna in a couple of weeks.
