Sony W series external batteries
« on: August 13, 2009, 02:45:13 PM »
I just finished a hack on a Sony DSC-W290 that I plan to use to video in 720p HD. It will eat through the batteries fast. I know that some people tape off the Sony battery positive connection. Does everyone do that? I don't see why it is needed. So if you use externals with your Sony W series hack, what do you do?  I also plan to hook up my solar panel cell phone charger to it.  I am anxious to see some animals in 720p.

Here is my newest camera. It is a Sony DSC-W290 12.1 megapixel camera in a Pelican 1020 case with 3 AA external batteries and a Simple Snaphot Sniper controller.  If you notice there is no flash or focus assist holes. This could be added but my use doesn't require it. I plan to use it to take 720p high definition video. I also put a resistor between the external bateries and the internal (150 ohms).  It goes out in the field this weekend. I also use a UV photo filter to put in front of the lens.  I will post the results later.

Nice looking setup. The taping of the positive terminal is to trick the camera to thinking a battery is there and if you hardwired in a external it would be in series with the internal. Maybe only on a W90

No the external is in parallel to the internal. I did not tape off the internal battery. It is still used.  I just put 150 ohm resistor in series between the batteries to limit current.
