I would start with getting a map. Then I would start looking at the road system and maybe trails in the unit, Then I would go out and start scouting. If your a rifle hunter it would be best to wait until archery season is over.

Wherever you see the most vehicles parked during elk season, hunt there.   :chuckle:

Packwood used to be a GREAT elk spot, now it's the twisp of elk season.  Good news is, you do a little scouting and a little hiking back, all that pressure set loose from ALL those trucks will push em right to ya  ;)

i can only recommend the tactics and techniques that most all others would recommend, i would advise however to wear camo that matches the terrain and backround, and the color of that camo should be bright orange, because thats all you will see out there, Lol.

get away from the roads, far away. look up back bone ridge and try to be first up there. oh and theres nothing wrong with scouting during archery season

Oh and be in shape!!! driving the roads won't get you much.
Hunter sucess in this area is low--unless of course you hunt in packwood itself :chuckle:
