You are right, it was probably the best marksmanship training I could have gotten him.  Usually we shoot at the range with benches, sandbags, known distances etc...  This was much more realistic.  Walking across the prairie with rifle and stix, spot a target, assess the range ("Dad, I know I can hit that..."), flip out the stix, get a steady sight picture, squeeze... and POP!  Instant feedback!
A couple of times we saw antelope at 150 or 200 yards.  I would set up the stix, he would get behind the scope and I'd say "Do you think you could hit him?"  After shooting 8 inch tall diggers those lopes looked huge to him.  "yeah dad.  easily!"

Gosh that looks like fun. Even with rimfires! 

Is there much public land over there to wack little ground squirels and the occasional doggy? Does Montana require a non-res hunting license for that?

We were hunting private (a ranch that my buddy rents a place on).  It bordered public (BLM) land though.
