Hancock Bear down!
« on: August 16, 2009, 01:47:31 PM »
So I get a phone message from my buddy yesterday at 2:45, " just shot a bear I'm up...." The message broke up " Damn" :bash:. So I call back several times and finally his wife answers all excited that they had just shot a bear and it was ina hole. She goes on to tell me they were watching a cut and he just got done saying "I wouldn't want to shoot a bear down there"! Moments later my buddies nephew says " there's a bear " Well out the window went the coment my buddy said. BLAMMY went the 300 wsm! They see the bear flop and drop out of sight. After I get all of that out if his wife she says *censored*! He just shot again and I hear over the radio we got em! I tell her I will gather the guys and we'll be there ASAP. I ask her what we might need and my buddy told her about a 100ft of rope and mumbled something about a cliff down to the river. Now I'm thinking maybe I should come down with the flu real quick :chuckle: Any way we gather the troops and head up there. We pull up to their rig and look down at the itty bitty spec that was my buddy and nephew! Now we're all thinking maybe they didn't see us pull up and we can just leave  :chuckle: The cut is steep and they are on the opposite end of it about 250 yrds away. Not really a big deal so we gather the gear and head down there. So we get down there and ask where the bear was? He points down a cliff 30 yards where we see the dead bear holding onto the only tree with one paw death gripped around it. Below that is 150ft straight down to the river.

Part II- So we devise a plan to have one guy with a packboard which I tied a rope off to rappel down to the bear tie a second rope to the bear and we would drag it up. So Aaron volunteers sorta to go down the cliff and he starts down thankfully without problems. He tied the bear off and we got the second rope back up the hill and we started to pull with Aaron following behind the bear. We were doing fine until about the last 15yrds, that's when it happened! Aaron made the mistake of putting the rope tied to the bear over the top of his. Well as the two were coming up it came to a point that the bear was putting pressure on Aarons rope so he had to either lift the bear over his rope or he had to up and under the bears rope. As he was trying to whatever his plan was it happened  :yike: the rope on the bear knocked Aarons favorite hat off and down the cliff!  :chuckle: We heard just a little cussing then we were back on track. We got the bear up and then Aaron a successful mission! Took some pics gutted her out then packed her to the road. She's not huge but she has some great color! I was proud to be part of the recovery and to gather with good Friends that dropped what they were doing to help out!

So, no rappelling down to get the hat????  How insensitive of everyone, not to let him down and pull him back up for the hat...   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Pretty bear, and one that will be appreciated for all the hard work it caused..
