Skok. River Indians....
« on: August 16, 2009, 09:48:58 PM »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I went fishing down there yesterday with my dad brother and my nephew who is only 10 he finally was able to get his VERY FIRST KING SALMON HOOKED probably about 15 lbs and he was getting it in. The Indian guy casted his treble hook out and snagged his fish and started reeling it in. I said man you just hooked his fish. He said "ha,ha,ha... " I said buddy you better let that fish go and he didn't want to. So I took the pole from my nephew as he was crying and started reeling and fighting my nephews legal mouth hooked fish with eggs in her mouth. And another Indian casted out there and snagged the same fish on purpose. Luckily I was using 20 lb bradied line so I had some fun doing it. But man why do they do this? What some ASS HOLES. I'm waiting to call the gamewarden tomorrow even though I should have called yesterday on the river. Oh ya they took the fish and CUT my nephews line... I said you   M....F....   I'm calling the sheriff and he said do you really wanna play "bows and arrows?" Well I have to wait and see what the gamewardens say and report this to them. But man I'm not going to pay $45.00 for my combo license get a hell of a good fish on and have them take it. Yet alone I paid $75.00 for a gate key for hunter farms access... I cant wait to see what they say... (the game warden)

THe title wasn't black skok fisherman though, and it wasn't whites, hispanics, orientals or blacks that rear ended his vehicle and destroyed his boat or took this kids first fish.

Keep us posted Yelm.  Doubt anything will happen but would be nice to know if you have any recourse.

The Skok really isn't the greatest place to introduce a kid to fishing. Chalk it up to a bad experience, teach your nephew that those ethics aren't what it's all about and take him somewhere he can have a quality experience. Maybe head up to Sekiu and rent a boat if you don't have one and catch silvers and humpies all day long. Something like that if you can. Sorry you had to experience that.

tmike is right, I've had some real quality days on the river but have also had some real negative ones such as having them drag a net or set a net up right where I was fishing.  Ive seen thousands of fish stacked in a pile with nothing but their eggs taken.  Hard to swallow.

This is why it is imperative for all of us to take a camera with us each time we hit the woods. Photo the incident and forward to wildlife and the local media. Let the truth be known.

i'd start by not fishing near the indians.  i don't like watching the crap that goes on there, for them it's perfectly legal.  plenty of areas to fish where you don't have to put up with that crap.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,

Damn Bone, given your employment position I would have thought cultural diversity training would have been mandatory. Its no longer acceptable to say "oriental", "Asian" is the accepted terminology. Progressive counseling on this could lead up to and include termination, so be careful ;)

The skok. indians are the worst I have fished around. I live ten minutes away and will not take my son there until the silver's are in, for that reason. The local officer's hate that fishery, when they write a ticket on a tribal member it get's thrown out. This fishery has turned into a snagfest and it realy blows. I almost wish they would post a officer there just to get the snagger's off the river.

Same thing on the chealis by aberdeen. Went sturgeon fishing with a friend not a boat on the river. We were fishing for a couple of hours and up the river comes and indian gillnet boat. They went over to the bank and tied the end of there net then layed it out around our boat and the net came up our anchor line. They just went in the cabin and shut the door and we had a really hard time getting our anchor back. I know it was done on purpose but what can you do. Like Phool says the state is;nt going to do anthing because of the treatys and they are written in stone.

I probably would have cut my anchor free, and it wouldn't have been the anchor line. Also times have changed, look at gun laws. If enough work is put in I think that they could be modified. I'm going to make a guess that back when they were signed they didn't have day restrictions on when they could net so things are subject to change. That is by no means a fact, but my thought process.

If that guy really did that on purpose that is total BS.  People like that are the ones that give Indians a bad name.  I would be quite pissed as well.  There is no excuse for ruining a kid's fishing trip out of nothing but greed.  Uncalled for.   :twocents:

Yep it's perfectly legal!! You could have had it on video and nothing will happen. I don't fish that river because it's not just about catching fish. It's about having a good time while catching fish.

Sorry to hear about the bad time but honestly this is what you should expect when going to that river these days. It's really sad it has come to that!! It makes me sick.

The 2 times I fished that river about 5 years ago I had the injuns walk up and string nets out below and above me, Then they started tossing m-80's into the hole I was fishing.  :bash: :bash: I won't go back and only can blame myself if I did and had a bad time. I know what to expect now. Plenty of other places to catch a King or 3.

Oh, and good on you for fishing with eggs and not the jerk and snag methods the other 99% use. I'm told them fish take a good cure really well!!

Most of the people were cool and knew how to combat fish. The only problem I saw was with the white side casting while a guy was fighting a fish. I saw more fish lost because of some body who couldn't wait.

Man that is to bad, not called for I know how you feel last year I took my kids to Kelso, smelt fishing and some non Tribal jerk off, idiot, saw my kid getting a couple every dip and he wasn't having as much luck and decided to wade out and stand in the hole my kids were fishing and cut them off, he didn't stay long after I told him what I thought.

that is too bad, I've never seen the treaties but that is bulls*#t in anybody's book, maybe the treaties need to be amended to include ethics!. I have some aquaintences not exactly friends from Skok and don't think too much of 'em. it's idiots like that that give good NDN people a bad rap. sorry about the way your kid felt, that sucks! by the way for those of you who don't know I am NDN. not that it makes any difference but some of us see things thru the eyes of that young man.

I've only fished a few rivers sense I moved over here 4 1/2 yrs ago. All the Native snagger's I've been around have been very cool. I don't like the nets, they seem to go out when they say there not going to put them out so fisherman can fish. I'd rather see snagging then nets. BTW, I had more problems with nonnatives. It's like bow hunting, someone sees an arrow hanging out of an animal and all bowhunters are bad. :twocents:

I would put a big treble hook on and  snagged me a Indian. I would make sure I set the hook real good. As for the game wardens go you are wasting your time. I hope you can take your son fishing somewhere you can enjoy fishing without some idiot indians.  Some times makes you want to take the law in your own hands .

I have been in a situation once where I needed to open the whoopass on someone....and I had a child with me. Having the kid with you limits your reaction. You have to bite your lip, lick your wounds, and keep the kid safe...  :bash:

I"m really sorry to hear what happened, it's just totally uncalled for.

If your looking to get him a fish, my buddy's been catching his limit every morning his gone and stood on the beach at Dash Point. The pink's seem to be hitting pretty darn good out there. Nothing like a King but at least it gets him his fish.

Uncool brings up a good question with his link....can they be cited for harrassing/obstructing the fisherman?

RCW 77.15.210
Obstructing the taking of fish, shellfish, or wildlife — Penalty.

(1) A person is guilty of obstructing the taking of fish[, shellfish,] or wildlife if the person:

     (a) Harasses, drives, or disturbs fish, shellfish, or wildlife with the intent of disrupting lawful pursuit or taking thereof; or

     (b) Harasses, intimidates, or interferes with an individual engaged in the lawful taking of fish, shellfish, or wildlife or lawful predator control with the intent of disrupting lawful pursuit or taking thereof.

     (2) Obstructing the taking of fish, shellfish, or wildlife is a gross misdemeanor.

     (3) It is an affirmative defense to a prosecution for obstructing the taking of fish, shellfish, or wildlife that the person charged was:

     (a) Interfering with a person engaged in hunting outside the legally established hunting season; or

     (b) Preventing or attempting to prevent unauthorized trespass on private property.

     (4) The person raising a defense under subsection (3) of this section has the burden of proof by a preponderance of the evidence.

I would say yes, BUT only if they are dumb enough to admit intent, or if an officer has the opportunity and cojones to observe the behavior and decide intent based on their observations.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

The problem is they claim they are not subject to Wa St Law. And often they are not (bound by law) in favor of "Tribal Court" taking place. (If anything)

If I were fishing with my son and some bassturd snagged my son's fish and tried to take it there would be an all out ass-whoopin. It might be my ass-whooped but I would not stop at words. This is why I do not do that "combat-fishing." I have watched and been subject to that kind of crap by Sports Fishermen as well. I have no tolerance for it. Sure, M a y b e something would be done to a Sports Fishermen but I can all but know for sure that nothing would happen to the Natives.

They are in fact, "Above The Law."
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.
