Author Topic: sport dog or tri tronics? (Read 9388 times)

i am starting to look into an e collar for my gsp for hunting, and am wondering what is best sport dog or tritronics? he knows all the obedience and commands etc, just so,etimes needs a little persuasion. and i want to stop him from chasing deer, skunks, chipmunks, porcupines, etc.

I've only owned Tri-Tronic's, and have had nothing but great success with them.. have never owned a Sport Dog, so I'll keep my yap shut... I do know that TT's are made in the U.S.

I love Dogtra, but based on your question, I'd choose Tri-Tronics over Sport Dog. I did a lot of research and TT and Dogtra were the top two. I like how the training collar chargers also work with the Dogtra bark collars. Good luck!

I have used Tri-tronics on hounds and labs work great also if customer service is an issue tt always took care of my stuff.

I like my tri tronics. It has the ability to controll 3 different collars at a time.

I have a Dogtra also (eight years old and still working). My dad has one too (brand new). They work great. Not sure about the other two, but if I had to pick I would probably choose the TT.

I would only use the Tri Tronic's collar!!!! I have used them all and the most reliable collar was the tri tronics. I would not recomend the Dogtra collar to anyone. There customer service SUCKS

I had a very serious issue with a collar of their's and contacted them regarding what had happened along with a call and a letter from my Vet. Nothing could make me happier than have somebody not buy there collar. The best deal on e collars is thru the collar clinic online they are also great people to work with!!!

I have a dogtra and haven't really had any problems with it but, next set will be a G3 Flyway....

I've had great luck with DT Systems old 500 series and newer iDT Micro. Bought the 500 16yrs ago and still use it for a backup (still on the original Recharable batts). Bought the Micro for the vibration mode as I had my old dog go deaf and needed to get her attention for hand signals on blind retrieves. Also have a DT systems Beeper Collar with a remote so I don't have to listen to it all the time, just have to turn it on to locate or to tell when he's on point in the cattails or heavy brush.

BullBlaster here is what I have: (I copied it from an earlier post.)

I have an old Dogtra 2000 T&B (Train and Beep). It worked great for my eight year old boy (GSP). He was pretty hard headed and the collar let him know I was still in control. The beeper portion on this collar works great as I can hit locate and it will beep letting me know where he is plus I can use the beeper on point mode also. Dogtra now has a new model out which is the 2500 T&B. The beeper and collar are all one unit. My dad has this one and it works even better than the old one, newer technology of course. Dogtra collars are pretty spendy, but mine is still going strong after 7 1/2 years. The beeper isn't waterproof anymore and fizzles out when it gets wet (submersed) now, but it was a good investment to make sure my $700 pup didn't get hurt or lost. I am going to get the new 2500 T&B here for my new GWP pup here shortly.

The beeper unit is great for finding your dog or using it on point mode when your dog is in the thick stuff. I can easily let my dog know that deer are a bad thing. Now he just looks at them and lets them go on by. Works great for snakes too. When I see one I will turn it up and then let him find it on his own and then WOW the snake gets him good. I usually act like nothing ever happened, so he always thinks it is the snake or deer and they are the bad ones to stay away from. Like I said above it is a great investment. Good luck in choosing a unit. Do your research and get what works for the type of hunting you will be doing.

mine only has one collar, but can take up to three.

Hey BULLBLASTER,

Tri Tronics has been around forever. Good choice. Price was right too! I have the Dogtra train and beep. 10 years old. Worked great for 9. Sending it in for repair. Water damage inside the collar. Im so excited about deer and elk hunting I have hardly thought about birds!! Its like a bonus hunting season! Cant wait for Trigger to meet Gauge and hunt side by side!

I have a Tri-Tronics and love the fact that I can control up to six dogs off of one transmitter! Besides...It's made in the USA!

I know you didn't list it but if I HAD to choose another brand it would be Dogtra.

Please post about your experience with getting your Dogtra T&B fixed. I have two of those collars, the older style and a new one of the redesigned versions. My old one is about 5 years old now and still going strong, but I suppose I'll have to have the battery replaced some day, assuming nothing else goes wrong with it....

I went online to interstate batteries http://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_estore/ and found a replacement battery. I even found a code for free shipping by doing a search online. I went to Dogtra's site to find the exact battery. I think it only cost me 11 or 12 bucks. The collar was easy to open and replace the battery. My unit is still waterproof except for the beeper horn dies out when it gets submerged. Unit seems to work as good as it did when I bought it. However, sending it in they probably replace the seals and test everything thoroughly.
