Olympic Wilderness Areas High Buck Hunts Question
« on: August 18, 2009, 05:22:06 PM »
The Wilderness Area's on the Olympic Penninsula are both in high and low areas (not just around the mountains). Is the high buck hunt open to ALL Wilderness Areas on the Olympic Penninsula as the Regs say, or just certain ones (i.e. above a certain elevation)? I dont see anything in the reg's other than "Wilderness Areas on the Olympic Wilderness". I am assumking it is open to all of them.

Any help would be great!!
Thanks

On a tangential note, there are a lot of antihunter hikers in those wilderness areas.
If you are going to hunt those areas stay away from all trails. I have heard of stories where the hikers threw rocks at the hunters.
You just have to be inside of the wilderness boudaries which usually are some distance from the nearest road.
Leave the deer just off the road until near dark  before loading it on the truck.
Change out of camo asap.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

It's a sad day when the man with the gun needs to be afraid of the man without one.

That said, it is still smart to minimize the impact you as a hunter have on hikers around you, no reason to fuel the anti's fire against hunters.

I was up in the Buckhorn Wilderness this past weekend scouting for High Buck and bear hunting at the same time.  My buddy and I were in camo with our rifles.  Saw several hikers and they were all friendly and some were offering advice on what they have seen while in the area.  Guess it is just luck of the draw on the type of people you run into.

They are open to all Olympic Wilderness areas...which might start out low, but they tend to go up high...and quickly.

And yes, I backpack out there a lot.  And if you didn't ask, you might assume I was an granola eating anti-hunter.  But this fall you might see me up there in my camo and rifle...with my granola eating girlfriend that also hunts.  Come by camp and we'll treat you to some bear gravy and biscuits!

We've also hiked up there in the Brothers wilderness, and I don't go into the woods without my rifle...people we saw were friendly.  And my only pack is camo would have preferred plain green but it is what it is and still didn't get bothered.

OH and I like granola as well  :chuckle:

I love granola! I also refuse to hide, and pretend that I am not doing something that is perfectly legal. We should not act as though we are ashamed of what we are doing. Just be respectful and non-confrontational, and report any abuse, confrontation, etc. to the authorities as soon as possible upon your return to civilization.

"Is the high buck hunt open to ALL Wilderness Areas on the Olympic Penninsula as the Regs say, or just certain ones (i.e. above a certain elevation)? I dont see anything in the reg's other than "Wilderness Areas on the Olympic Wilderness".

I go with what the regs say; "Alpine Lakes, Glacier Peak, Pasayten, and Henry Jackson Wilderness Areas, and wilderness areas on the Olympic Peninsula".

I assume that means all wilderness areas on the Olympic Peninsula, regardless of elevation or other qualifier.

There's no bucks on Colonel Bob! ;)  I've been up there several times.

All of you will have much much better luck if you went elsewhere...or maybe waited for late rifle season.
